Blurred the line between fact and fiction
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. As a retired military member, it was refreshing to read some of the military lingo that was common in my former career. Great detail but not overly technical - easy to follow without having military experience. The scary thing is that as I was reading this book, I was also paying close attention to the events unfolding in Eastern Europe today. When discussing current events, I had to make sure I was referencing the news and not the book. It is hard to believe this was written five years ago and not five days ago.I am also extremely grateful for the lack of profanities, obscenities, or unnecessary sexual references that so commonly fill the pages of this genre. It was refreshing to be able to read it without the distraction of that garbage. Thank you!!!

Solid military fiction in a modern setting
I have read a lot of negative reviews of this book here, but having just finished reading it, I'd like to publish my own thoughts. The book's setting seems to be an accurate, though fictionalized, depiction of conflict set against current domestic and world affairs. If, like me, you enjoy well written military fiction set at an operational/strategic level, with a bit of tactical thread thrown in (but with good character continuity), you'll like it. On the other hand, if you are a fan of US "nation building" and overthrow of foreign governments and their rulers, you may not enjoy it so much (see all the 1 star reviews by people who feel this way). I personally feel like the US has tread a morally distasteful and controversial line, and Ukraine was hardly an exception to this. You may say that the Russian annexation of Crimea was unlawful, but it is a fact that until 1954, Crimea was part of the nation (and then Soviet republic) of Russia from 17830, not part of Ukraine? It was only, in 1954, transferred to the then Soviet Ukrainian republic for administrative reasons. Is it so unnatural that the ethnic Russians in Crimea and eastern Ukraine wish to be part of Russia again? Especially in view of the questionable Euromaidan overthrow of a legitimate ruler (consider reading the Wikileaks data on this - as much as I disapprove of Wikileaks, I believe they had a great deal of accurate data). This book was a fun read. Sometimes authors have to stretch military facts to create good fiction, this is no exception. I also wouldn't rank this book's technical accuracy as high as, for example, Harold Coyle's Team Yankee was when it was published in 1986 with then-solid intelligence (it had errors too). On balance, I'm continuing with the series and am happy to do so. Cut the author a break, his lack of accurate knowledge of tactical radio communications - this wasn't part of his military experience on J-2 and J-3 staffs. But it does seem to have qualified him to write to the strategic and operations aspects quite well, and convincingly.Highly Recommended. This is only a four star review because 5 stars are reserved for masterpieces (e.g. "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Hemingway, or "Anna Karenina" by Tolstoy. Too many reviewers skew the review scale by their lack of literary standards. If I had graded this on typical reviewer scale, it would have been a 5 star.

Life imitates Art.
Life imitates art. This crisply-written book -- or is it a road map -- often reads like a news dispatch about the current war between Russia on the one hand and Ukraine and NATO on the other. Unlike today's piecemeal news reports, "Battlefield Ukraine" gives an overall "drones eye" view of a how a war unfolds, seen from the point of view of participants on both sides, ranging from foot soldiers to Presidents. The authors know their subject well and weave facts into the narrative. So, although written 5 years ago, the cast of characters will be familiar. So too the background and events. A Russia nervous about its frontiers. A US perceived by its foes as divided and in decline. An uncertain new President. Dissenters in Congress. Vacillating allies. A China hungry to expand. Poisonous social media. Cyber warfare.A fair amount of military talk here. All the better to see how it really goes in battle and to understand the timeless truth that one Roman historian (and ex-soldier) finally admitted near the end of the Roman Empire: We're good in battle, but so is the enemy and sometimes they are better. Never, ever under estimate them. Do read this book.

If you like Tom Clancy book you will love this series.
The book that starts the great series. This is a really good book. Written very well with a good story and character. Ranks right up there with Tom Clancy’s Red Storm Rising. Good technical info. I look forward to these authors other books. Each book is as good as the last one.

WWIII for a fiction in the modern world
Excellent book !!!!The authors did an incredible job. I thoroughly enjoy it and recommend it.The authors chose realism and accuracy. In the 1 book of this 3 part series, I wish to underline the fact that if this did happen the characters that are in the book would get killed/maimed/or survive like they did in the book. This is what I Liked the best... the realism. Nothing is far fetched and ridiculos. It's not because your the hero or a main person in the chapter that you'll be fine. Not like a lot of other books where the "hero" easily beats 15 enemies without breaking a sweat. None of that here. Both side are very strong and capable.Again great book.Like a modern updated version of red storm rising.

Buy if you enjoy Tom Clancy
I've always been a big fan of Tom Clancy books and was looking for a more contemporary version of Red Storm Rising. This is a great series of books which capture the essence of a modern WWIII conflict with a lot of thought and research put into the current geopolitical situation. The dialogue is a little bit stilted and shallow in some aspects but after reading the first book I then bought the other five all at once and look forward to reading them whenever I get a chance. A great story filled with lots of action and a very plausible premise. Recommend to anyone interested in military fiction.
