Shovels & Rope

To recap from my review of O' Be Joyful (another great album by these two):I heard them first after The Lumineers on Austin City Limits. At first, I found myself wishing The Lumineers had closed the show, but then, it just clicked. I turned the volume up a bit. Trent absolutely wailed on guitar. Volume up a bit more. Their vocals clawed their way into my ears and then the harmony just blew me away. Leaned forward in my seat. Then I could tell they'd written the songs. Then they switched instruments. Volume up a bit more. Then I realized that they were doing it all--drums, harmonica, guitars, vocals, keyboards---I mean *all* of what I was hearing. It ended too soon, with me slack-jawed in front of my TV grabbing for my phone to head over to the Amazon mp3 store.Fell in love. Bought both albums and their solo efforts. Haven't had the slightest regret since. These two are the real deal folks. They write, they sing, they play, and they electrify a room.Highlights here:1) "Boxcar" for sure. Great story song.2) "Mexico" a haunting ballad.3) "Magdelina" not for the kids necessarily, but an amazing song. Complex, nuanced, raunchy, and ultimately real. And the harmonies are just gorgeous here.4) "Hollowpoint Blues" is raucous and a heckuva ride.The rest of the songs are all keepers as well, but these are the standouts. Buy it. Listen to it. Live with it. Then go see them live. You'll see what I mean.

Ms. Hearst has the big voice and can belt it when she wants to--sometimes she chooses not to. Mr. Trent is a backup voice although he takes the lead on some numbers and does just fine. Overall, they're very interesting: country, it would seem at first, then maybe rockabilly with some definite straight rock and even bluesy tunes. I think they're still figuring out their sound and their main strength, but it's fun to watch them explore. They're a lot more classy than just a shovel and a rope.

Usual good music. Avoid buying a cd from third party for the outrageous price listed since the cd is included With the vinyl. Too much gouging going on

Excellent album: from two very talented and unique singers who have great chemistry and vocal harmony. All around fun, great sound and meaningful songs and lyrics: Highly recommend!!

Love it! Long road drives from Seattle to Moab I'm rocking the S&R. Fun music and great tunes. Build Around Your Heart a Wall is the bees knees!

Hearst and Trent got together and recorded a gem. Don't miss out on this one. Listen to Boxcar, Magdelina, or Hollowpoint Blues and you can hear some very original material. Unique combos of instrumentation, stylish vocal harmonies make it a great vehicle for their entertaining stories of desperation and misery. Great album!

Only recently started listening to this band, but love them. The lady singing has a great voice and the harmonies are awesome. Wish they had more than 2 CDs.

New group with great songs. Americana Music.......So much better than the new stuff coming out of Nashville! Not your same ole, same old songs and music.

...das sind sie, zunächst nicht mehr - allerdings bezieht sich diese Empfehlung auf ihre zweite gemeinsame Aufnahme O' Be Joyful. Also da reingehört: bärenstark. Wer's nicht glaubt, soll sich ihre `Hail Hail'-Version (KEXP-Radio) auf youtube anhören, einschließlich der hier von ihnen verwendeten Fuzzbox. Herausgefordert fühle ich mich aber durch ihre erste Aufnahme Shovels & Rope, die noch unter ihrer beider Namen - Cary Ann Hearst und Michael Trent - entstanden ist. Frühe Aufnahmen sind oftmals rauher, ungeschliffener und sagen mehr über die musikalischen Wurzeln aus. Und außerdem kenne ich O'Be Joyful ja nun schon........denn nach deren Hören, und dem der unterschiedlichsten Live-Versionen auf youtube, steht meine Meinung eigentlich fest: sehr effektvolle Zweitauflage der White Stripes, wenn auch mit stärkerer Folkausprägung und weniger Blues, will heißen, eine nicht allzu versierte singende Drummerin, an selbstgebastelten Drums, und ein instrumental nicht sonderlich ambitionierter singender Gitarrist versuchen das Konzept des professionellen Dilettierens mit wechselndem Leadgesang grade noch mal aufzuwärmen. Warum auch nicht?! - kommt ja nicht schlecht (siehe: oben). Außerdem sind sie, wie die youtube-Aufnahmen zeigen, immerhin in der Lage die Gerätschaften zu tauschen - wer hätte jemals Frau White an der E-Gitarre gesehen?!Umso überraschter bin ich, als ich dann auf ihrer Website lese, wer ihre Bezüge sind, oder besser, wen sie selbst als solche ansehen: The Knitters, also diese sehr spezielle Form dilletierenden Roots-Rock'n'Roll's und Country's den John Doe und Exene Cervenka zusammen mit Dave Alvin, in der Nachfolge ihrer X-Punk-Band, Mitte der 80er Jahre einspielten. Und das kommt hier auf ihrer ersten Aufnahme tatsächlich hin: weitgehend akustischer Roots-Rock, Rock'n'Roll und auch elegischer Folk-Blues, wie z.B. auf Swing Low, oder auch mal ein verhaltener Gospel-Prayer, wie auf Can't hardly stand it, mit so allen möglichen Roots-Instrumenten eingespielt, also A- und E-verstärkte A-Gitarre, Banjo, Mandoline, eine singende Säge und vermutlich jeder Menge Waschbrett etc. - wie eben im Americana-Land momentan so viele klingen. Nur der Country-Versuch, wie bei den Knitters, der fehlt. Produziert hat übrigens Joey Waronker, seines Zeichens der Drummer von Jedermann, u.a. REM.Die größte Überraschung benamsen sie auf ihrer Website gleich hinterher - den Einfluss von Gram und Emmylou. Der kommt zunächst nicht so richtig zum tragen, bis man dann beim letzten Song `Mexiko' angekommen ist: Tatsache - auch wenn ihre Stimme von der Emmylou Harris' sich doch erheblich unterscheidet, bekommt Cary Ann Hearst hier doch zumindest im Grundton die angestrebte typische Emmylou-Färbung hin. Auch der Stil der Song-Komposition stimmt.Klingt doch alles gut...soweit?! Jaaaa, wenn man allerdings ihre zweite Aufnahme im Kopf hat, dann gibt es hier doch zwei Einschränkungen: erstens mangelt es noch ein wenig sehr an der Schärfung des eigenen Profils, vor allem des musikalischen. Das könnte auch jeder und jede andere sein. Zweitens fehlt ganz klar der Druck, auch Power genannt, den O' Be Joyful vermittelt. Doch ist damit immerhin der Nachweis geliefert, dass sie zu Steigerungen fähig sind! Deshalb knappe vier Sterne - fast richtig gut.
