Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl: A Novel

I thought the book was great. I didn't mind the diary style at all, and it kept my attention the whole time. You don't generally find autobiographies on a topic like this, so I found it quite fascinating to get a real inside look, not the "Hollywood" version.

If you're looking for a light but titillating read, then this is the book for you. It explores the hidden world of callgirls, and isn't afraid use racy dialogue and vocabulary, or explicitly describe the goings-on behind closed doors.A Quick re-cap of the novel: Nancy is a 30-something callgirl who not only loves her job, but has aspired to be a prostitute since she was 10 (a little strange and far-fetched, but still fun). The book opens with Nancy performing a threesome on a client with her friend Allison, which immediately draws you into her world of sex. Nancy is also recently engaged to a handsome and loving "up-and-comer" in the banking biz who has no idea that his fiance gets paid to have sex. He thinks she's a copy-editor. The book storms through much drama as Nancy struggles with her desire to continue her callgirl exploits, and her desire to marry Matt and become the respectable wife she knows he deserves. She also has serious trouble with Matt's nosy sister, and her friend Allison's irresponsible ways.A Few Flaws...SPOILER ALERT!While I feel the book is overall very entertaining, there were a couple things that bothered me. One of them is Nancy's friend Allison. Allison, while her heart may be in the right place, causes trouble and grief for Nancy, and generally becomes an extrememly annoying character.Also, there was a bit of a problem with proper closure at the end of the book. It felt a little like towards the end the action was moving along pretty well and then suddenly...the book was done. There were a few key plot-points that were never properly explored or explained. Such as, does Matt's sister, Elspeth, know about Nancy's true vocation? Why didn't Nancy ever confront Jason (Elspeth's husband, and her future brother-in-law by marriage) when she discovered he was sneaking around and seeing Allison behind his wife's back? (allegedly she didn't push the subject because she didn't want it to draw attention to her own life as a callgirl, but I feel there still couldn't have been some better closure on the subject). And finally, why wasn't the issue of Nancy's desire to be honest with her fiance Matt ever resolved? I expected her to eventually come clean and tell him about being a callgirl...but it just never happened, even though the idea was toyed with throughout the whole book.However, the reason I gave this book 4 stars, despite its flaws, is because of it's brazen ability to bring the world of sex to light. In a country that was founded by prudes, we sometimes forget that sex, and the desire to have and enjoy sex is a natural and healthy thing. I'm not advocating prostitution, by any means, but I do want to applaud this books healthy acceptance of sex and desire. Nancy may have some problems, but at least she's very clear on her ideas of sexuality and its place in our world.

It wasn't too bad - I mean, it was fluff, of course, but quite enjoyable fluff - till her "computer crashed" right before the climax. What an incredibly cheap cop out of an ending. I'd already gotten gifted the sequel from a used book store, which is why I bought this in the first place. So I already knew that she was going to end up married, but... how???

The writing is very plebian and boring. What I thought would be interesting comes across like reading a contractors done list

This book is hilarious. Very well written and a quick read.

I'm so glad I bought it used for one cent, it was still overpriced. I bought it to occupy myself on my treadmill, but it bored me to death. Simply put,there is no plot. The characters seemed fake to me. In good books, characters seem like real people. She just describes one sex act after another, talks too much about jasmine(who seemed like the main character)and a hookers union. There is no story. The most ridiculous thing in the book is when the main hooker character goes to see her attorney and the attorney spills the beans on her future sister in law, saying "oh, she's doing undercover work now on.....". Right. An attorney is going to tell secrets to his hooker client. I'm an attorney, and I can assure the author that such an attorney would be disbarred. Stay away from this horrible book!!!!!!!!

Funny , interesting easy to read and lots of good lessons ho to handle the man of your life :)

While not the best-written or most compelling chick lit out there, Nancy Chan's diary is an entertaining and revealing look into the ups and downs in the world of the high-priced hooker. Especially in light of the Spitzer kerfuffle in New York, that world holds a lot of interest for us average, non-prostitute gals. Obviously there's quite a bit about explicit sex in this book, so it isn't for kids or the ultra-sensitive, but isn't a bodice-ripper either - no "throbbing members" here. Quan's - and Nancy's - approach to sex is matter-of-fact, ho-hum it's a job so why make a big deal? If you liked the Salon column, you'll like the book - same stuff, only more in-depth so you can finally found out what happened to Nancy outside the confines of the column. Recommended.

Couldn’t put it down

A circle of friends chewing the fat about fashion, shoes, accessories, psychiatrists, waxings and last but not least men and life-altering decisions. Sound familiar? Yes, it does indeed sound a bit like SATC. "Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl" is just that, but with a twist:Tracy Quan, ex-call girl and spokeswoman for the prostitutes of New York, shares the views of her main character Nancy Chan and her co-workers on those topics/matters. And she does that in a streetwise, sexy and very observant way. Her style of writing is fluent and engaging. Apart from being sexy (some may call it "raunchy" or "naughty"), "Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl" is an entertaining and a thought-provoking, although not always believable, read on the sexual rat race. Am looking forward to reading more books by Tracy Quan.

娼婦であった作者の半自伝的な小説です。知らない世界のことなのでとても興味を持って読めました｡恋人に打ち明けるべきか、娼婦として生活をすることのリスクなどのエピソードは面白かったです。ただラストがいけません・・。ここまでいろいろなエピソードをつくるなら最後まできちんと書き込んで欲しかった気がします｡なので★３つ。マンハッタンの地名、ホテル､店の名前などがたくさん出てくるので少し知らないとイメージが湧きにくいかも知れません。洋書を少し読み込んだ人むけだと思います｡

no regrets worries or conciense! thats all I can say about the main lady(i use it loosely) in this book. Happy to split her personal and work life even at some points having empathy for her customers????I got this for a saucy read but all it gave me was the feeling that I wanted to shout at her to grow up and make a decision! dont buy it for a thrill, read it if youve got a lot of spare time!!

I enjoyed the book mainly because I found the character very funny. The story is quite average. Basically it is about a girl who is secretly working as a call girl but has a respected boyfriend who she hopes to marry soon. The writer gives a quite good view of the girl's life. Overall it is a good book so if you are interested how a New York call girl lives than this book is for you.
