The toy pirate sword is made of pine and is exceptional quality. Swords are stained with a kid-friendly water base stain. Handle is wrapped with black electrical taping. Dull edges for child safety. The pirate sword measures 17 inches in length. Not for small children. The toy shield is made from 25 percent plywood and is lightly glossed to give it a slight shine but keeps its natural color. Edges are sanded carefully for child safety. Handle is made of pine and keeps its natural color. Length is 13 inches and the width is 8 inches. Makes a great youth starter set or costume.

Annoyed that the photo/description did not mention the shield would differ from the one on the seller page. It wasn't a fun skull with sword design or ship but a cross that seemed too religious for my taste.

What a fun set! We bought this for my eight-year-old son for Christmas, and he (and all of his brothers) have had a great time playing with them. They're very sturdy and well made. Unlike many toys that we buy them, I don't foresee these breaking any time soon.

I purchased 3 sets and one of the swords broke immediately. They are cute but they were very unfinished and had splinters on them from the wood not being sanded very well. The boys loved them, outside of a couple slithers in the skin.

Solid wood, pretty smooth edges. Great for a 5 year old boy.
