Kingdom Hearts: The Novel - light novel

Different from the game and some content missing
I like the direction it was going but since I played the game it was a poor experience, however, it introduced Sora in a new light. It was weird to not see him use any magic, only relying on the keyblade and swinging it to defeat the heartless but it was refreshing after a while. Little Mermaid, Hercules, and Holloween Town is missing from the story, along with Winnie the Pooch only making a reference but not explored. It was a fun read but the game does a better job telling Sora's first journey.I recommend it to people who still want to know what Kingdom Hearts is about, but I also suggest you watch the gameplay footage from Kingdom Hearts Final Mix to understand the full story.

Do not be discouraged.
Okay read , starts of very fast paced and charming but slowly loses its stamina when we start going to worlds. It must have been fairly difficult to write since the author wasn't able to completely dive in and change the story since he had a script to follow . Anyways Chain of memories is great cause it reflects on emotions and insecurity. Couldn't do that here since the game of the first revolved around introducing Disney characters and a lot less about Sora and how he feels. I still picked this up cause I'm a fan , and trust me the next novel is ALOT better so don't be discourage to pick this up.

Good Introduction to the KH Series, but sometimes falls short on delivery.
A wonderful read if you're a fan of the game, and a wonderful introduction to the series if you're not. The novel is written at roughly a 4th grade reading level, but remains accessible and enjoyable for all ages. The writing is a little episodic despite the serial format, and for fans of the game it is worth noting that for some reason Atlantica is left out of both this and Chain of Memories, however many of the additions more than make up for the loss of the water world. The main thing keeping this from a five star review is the writing of the action scenes, which are short, woefully underdeveloped, and stiff. The fights typically end in a single blow, and they easily break any immersion the rest of the novel carefully tries to set up.

Perfect for any Kingdom Hearts Fan!
Book came in perfect condition. The art work looks amazing and the storyline is exactly what I expected as someone who plays the games. Easy to read. Perfect book to read as a way to take a break from my usual long novels. As a Kingdom Hearts fan I am absolutely thrilled by this light novel and plan to expand my collection to have them all!!

So I guess Sora didnt go to Atlantica or Halloween Town or Olympus Coliseum.
See, I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the writing I enjoyed reading everything inthe character's voices, imagining the battle scenes. The writing itself was a bit bland. But I thoroughly enjoyed this book. What made me very angry was that they left out bits and pieces. As I got further in the book I started to wonder,Wait, wasn't Olympus Coliseum after wonderland? Where's Cloud and Hercules? Then of course they skipped Atlantica and Halloween town.I guess they didn't think it would make that much of a difference because they were just "filler worlds"But what's going to happen when they write a book about Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories? They're not going to include Atlantic or Halloween Town or Olympus Coliseum because they aren't in Sora's memories because he never went! What about Kingdom Hearts II? I can just imagine it "Hey Jack! Hi Ariel! Hi Herc! Oh wait I don't actually know any of you!"What about Cloud? Sora doesn't know Cloud! Oh my god.Okay aside from all of that. I really love how they portrayed Sora in this book.I love how he's happy and goofy. I love how he loves Donald and Goofy, but he never forgets about Riku and Kairi. He's still loyal to them even as he forms his relationships with all the new friends he makes. He reflects on them in almost every situation. He's the teenage goofball we all expected him to be. He eats a ton. I love his character. This was a really good book overall and if they hadn't have forgotten those worlds I would have loved it. This is a must have for any Kingdom Hearts fan. But if you're looking for a more accurate representation I suggest you read the manga.

An Excellent Adaptation of an Excellent Video-game
This is a great adaptation of the first KH game and a welcome addition to my bookshelf. The translation by Melissa Tanaka is well done and effective in telling the story, and the illustrations by Shiro Amano are gorgeous. Keep in mind that this is an adaptation, and so things have been cut and put in accordingly. For example, Ursula, Hades, and Oogie-boogie, along with their respective worlds, have been omitted from the story. This leaves only Maleficent, Jafar, and Captain Hook as villains (excluding Ansem, Seeker of Darkness) , which is disappointing, but understandable. Atlantica, Olympus Coliseum, and Halloween Town, while fun, were not essential in telling the story of Kingdom Hearts. One addition is the encounter with Xemnas in Hollow Bastion (a scene from the Final Mix version of the game) which is a great teaser of what is to come for Sora and his friends. This is not the best way to get into the franchise (I'd start by getting the HD collections of the games on the PS3), but as a person with a passion for both reading and gaming I really grew to love this book. I plan on getting all the English translations of the novels as they release them. If you're a fan of Square, Kingdom Hearts or Disney, try this book. You'll be glad you did!

Recommend to Any Kingdom Hearts Fan
Wonderful adaption! Kanemaki does a good job recounting the plot of the first game. There are a couple things from the game that aren't included (such as Halloween town) and a few minor differences in some scenes, but all the key plot elements are in place. The writing is a little lackluster at times, but that's probably just be because it wasn't originally written in English. There are a few cute extra scenes and I loved having some additional inner monologues and interactions between the characters. Shiro Amano's illustrations inside are gorgeous; I wish there had been a few more of them! Adorable book, can't wait to see some other KH novels in English.

A great read
A really great retelling of one of.my.fondest childhood games. I really enjoyed the extra depth the writer brought to the story explaining some things only conveyed in the game.

Brillant Book!
I have recently finished reading this first book in the series and I absolutely loved it! Being a Kingdom Hearts fan, I was excited to see that they did books as well as the manga so thought I'd have a go at them! And I was not disappointed! The book itself is lovely, with colour pictures in the front and black and white pictures throughout, evenly spaced between the chapters. Some of the worlds in the game have been missed out from the book, such as Halloween Town, Atlantica and the Pride Lands, but that does not lower the book in my estimation! The writing is very sweet, and I like how it is written in the third person, so you can see some of the other characters thought processes-not just Sora's. Overall, I think it is a great book and an excellent addition to the shelf of a Kingdom Hearts fan!

Any Kingdom Hearts fan will love this!
Great representation of Kingdom Hearts 1. Being a huge time Kingdom Hearts fan I thought it would be difficult to catch the epic tale in text without the iconic Kingdom hearts music.Would you be better of playing the game or watching the cutscenes , yes. However the book does an excellent job showing Sora's struggle in the first game with artwork done by Shiro Amano (Also the illustrator the Kingdom Hearts manga). It misses Atlantica and Halloween Town so you miss out on the interactions of Sora & the gang in those two places which return in Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts 2 so I'd say they are semi-important.The actual book includes around 11 pieces of artwork from my count to help you imagine the environment. The text itself is great at helping set the scene and the dialogue still retains the whimsical nature of certain scenes. To sum it up,any Kingdom Hearts fan will love this! It misses a couple of worlds/scenes but is still great as a standalone title. The following is my opinion :Kingdom Hearts 1 didn't have as much as depth as Kingdom Hearts 2 and its sequels (BBS,365/2,DDD etc) so if you read this and don't find it interesting do not let it deter you, it gets much better!

Looking forward to the next Kingdom Hearts novel...
I really hope Yen Press carries on with the Kingdom Hearts novel series. This book contains the English version of both of the first Kingdom Hearts novels that tell the story of the first game in full. The book contains some fantastic artwork by Shiro Amano (who illustrates the manga series) as an added bonus which I absolutely love. I would really, really recommend this for any Kingdom Hearts fan or anybody else who loves Disney. I'm looking forward to Chain of Memories The Novel!
