Swan: Poems and Prose Poems

Mary Oliver is my hero. She is nearly 80 now but deserves all the awards she's been given. Only she can mingle the natural world with the beauty of the poetic line. She is a stunning poet. I am on my way to owning every single one of her books; I'm about half-way there. If I could own just one copy of one signed book in the world, it would be one of hers.

Great summer book read. Poems are great. The letter font is the perfect size for reading, not too big or too small.

Beautiful, delicate, simple, lush, succulent poems with fun surprises here and there. I read it with my ten year old daughter and we adored the experience.

I have devoured this pre-ordered copy and then re-read much more slowly. I love her take on nature and its realism - yes, she finds so much beautiful but she knows the darker side and in accepting that, accepts the truth of things in nature (including ourselves, naturally.) I laughed at the Percy (her dog)poems and then saw deeper wisdom in them. I look forward to immersing myself in the book over time. My favorite poem at this point is "For Example". Who can resist the line? "But we all know, don't we, how sometimes things have to feel anger, so as not to be defeated?"

It was coincidence that this book actually arrived from Amazon the day that Mary Oliver died. It is a great collection of her work made bittersweet that the arrival was at the same time of her passing.

This pristine copy of Swan fills a gap on my Mary Oliver shelf. So glad to find it, and it arrived super fast.

As always, Mary Oliver's poetry does not disappoint. I always read her books quickly then pull them off the shelf over and over again to savor. Nature and her heart are intertwined. I see the world in a whole new way. A must read for poetry lovers!!!!!
