On a body-strewn Pacific hell, nine Japanese surrender to American troops. Then another handful. Then another. Soon, hundreds give up, urged by a lone warrior fighting tough and speaking their language. But the warrior isn't a countryman. He's Marine Guy Gabaldon, a non-Asian kid from the streets of East L.A. From Guy's cross-cultural upbringing in a Japanese-American family to his heroism as he repeatedly risks his life to save untold numbers of fellow Devil Dogs, Hell to Eternity tells Guy's rugged, real-life story. He won the Navy Cross...and the gratitude of all America. If his tale were fiction, you might not believe it. But it's real. And unforgettable in its courage, sacrifice and honor.

Movie of flawed, poor boy who became a savior of our troops AND Jap troops and civilians
The Japs fought as hard as they did because their leaders told them that Americans loved killingprisoners and eating children and women. This canard was broadcast to people in SE Asia in 1960sand many people in 'The boonies' believed it.So much misunderstanding. Thank God for Guy.

Hell To Eternity
There are some movie productions which portray the positive outcome of cross-cultural upbringing for a boy who would have been lost to juvenile delinquency. Here is such a true story that is a tribute to American Society that is not perfect but has the capacity to correct anysocial incongruence. There is a saying about saving one life can save the world. Guy Gabaldon, was a non-Asian boy lost in the streets of East Los Angelos after he lost his parents. Then, a Japanese-American family befriends Guy who learns the Japanese language as well as the universal standard under the Natural Law - the value of any individual human being who is worthy of love and life. Guy's difficult youth prepared him the rugged real-life story he would endure as an American Marine Soldier in the Pacific during World War II. The Japanese were taught to believe suicide was the only option because capture by the Allies was nothing but multiple atrocities. But Guy Gabaldon, a non-Asian could speak their language and grasp their values so that a hand full of Japanese surrendered - then, another. When wounded Japanese were received humane treatment and medical attention - even among American wounded - the word spread. As Guy continuedhis efforts, soon hundreds gave up to live because a young, fighting tough young warrior spoke their language and urged them endure. It is a true fact during World War II in the Pacific, for every 2 Japanese soldiers killed, one American soldier was killed. Guy Gabaldon was awarded the Navy Cross - and the gratitude of the USA. Here is real heroism. Here is a true story. The U.S. Constitution states, "We, the People ..." This statement will take on new meaning and you will receive a good lesson about true Patriotism when this true life productionis in your DVD collection. I have shown this movie to other acquaintances who remarked this is the kind of lessons we should have learned in school. This is real courage, sacrifice and honor.

Classic Pacific War Story with Japanese/American Internment Addressed
Critics of the movie complain it is unclear what story it want to tell. Does it want to condemn the internment of American citizens? Or be a graphic war movie ? There is some gratuitous stripping also. But nowhere else is the story of Guy Gabalden told. If you don’t know the story then watch the movie. Then read “The Fleet at Flood Tide” by Hornfischer

Great old time war movie
Saw this on my TV when I was a kid and really wanted to have it to enjoy it today whenever I wanted to .I really enjoy the lead actor Jeffery hunter , he was basically the 1st captain kirk before William Shatner, he wanted to do movies instead of a TV series, so when he left it opened it up for Shatner, sadly hunter died much to young .

If you like Jeffrey Hunter, you will like this!
Based on a true story. I’m sure that some of the story told in the movie took some liberties, but still a fine movie.Plus! Jeffrey Hunter will always be super cool. And I like black and white movies.

I got the movie last week and it was a absolute delight to relieve those intense moments of war
I saw this movie way back in the sixties (in ALGIERS) as a teenager. The title of the movie was 'SAIPAN'. It left a truly indelible mark on me then. For the past 12 to 15 years I tried to find it. It is few weeks ago, after an intensive search through the internet that I discovered that the original title of the movie was HELL TO ETERNITY. Only AMAZON could source it for me. I got the movie last week and it was a absolute delight to relieve those intense moments of war. CINEMA was at its best then and there is nothing like the HELL to ETERNITY movie to prove it.

War with a Message- Socially Significant
For the time it was made it has significant underlying social messages about culture and country; the question and in a way the political dilemma during war time is what makes a good citizen and constitutes devoted patriots/nationalists member of a society (the same applies to Canada and the United Kingdom even though this movie references the USA) - it was shocking how first generation immigrants and even second and third generation immigrants were treated during world war 11. It is a lesson we still need to learn- history is still repeating itself. We are still recovering for past infractions nearly 80 years on.Back to the movie- It is a highly compelling story with good acting and the brutal truth about war. It is a war movie, but with a strong social-psychological underpinning to it.
