Review: Should be mandatory reading for all PMs - I made the jump from a career in the military, to sales, and recently to product management. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone to the product management world! Steven does an excellent job detailing first hand examples from his career and supporting them with tactics and guidelines that can be used by the reader immediately. He also provides many useful templates and tools which I plan on incorporating many of ASAP. Only regret is I didnโt read it sooner! Review: Muy buen libro - Muy bueno para tenerlo en al Biblioteca.

great resource for every product manager - and others
I have been a product manager for 21 years. I read the first edition of this book shortly after I started in this role and it was great. This new version has a lot of the same information because the reality is that the same core principles apply but it has been updated with this content: A product management acumen assessment (https://survey.sequentlearning.com/s3/PMAcumen) โข Action planning ideas at the end of each chapter โข Techniques to earn empowerment โข Tools to develop product strategies and roadmaps โข Methods to deploy and release products โข Metrics to assess product performance A lot of this was needed - such as methods to deploy and release products - because of the massive shift in how software is built, delivered, updated, and distributed! But, it is also helpful in the reality of what a real dev environment is - IT must manage both agile and linear projects. Adopt new technology and maintain legacy apps and be resilient. Love the content focused on how to influence others that do not report to the product manager - which is just about everyone. It is actually great advice for life, but it is especially critical in Product Management as it is an interesting role, like ceo of a product, but not a product owner, and is different in every organization - some places put it in engineering, others in marketing. Some have an outward facing role and others have an inward facing role and others are a combination.

The book I didn't know I needed.
As a small business owner who doesn't have an MBA, I rely on my intuition and feedback for what is working and what needs to be RE-WORKED and I have made a lot of mistakes and at times have even been daunted on where to begin. Now that I have this book, I have a clear set of guidelines to help fuel my purpose and passion with more savvy intentions. I love this book! It helped me understand the clear ROLE of a product manager and how to best assess what you want your products to do, not to do, and position yourself outside of what everyone ELSE is doing so you can stand out. There are strategies and processes that assist you in the development in a successful product and tools to help you take an honest look at yourself, the product and the organization to create a more holistic level of success no matter what it is that you are planning to launch. I am enjoying this book so much that I can't help but to order his other title, The Product Manager's Desk Reference, just so I have two "bibles" that fill a space that help me become a better entrepreneur. For those who are already in this role, it can only help you improve. If you didn't know this WAS a role but have been doing it on the fly, then you DEFINITELY need it!

Remains a good reference for product managers
Product management is changing all the time. The survival guide provides a comprehensive view of the PM role presented in a readily accessible way. Recommended for people who are new to product management, provides less eureka insight for seasoned PMโs. The book provides a solid, no nonsense and actionable definition of product management disciplines and activities. This makes the book more valuable than one that talks at high conceptual levels. If you have read the first version there is little reason to buy up to this version. If you are looking for a reference for Product Management, then this is a good one. Chapters 1. Introduction to product management 2. Understanding the role of the product managers and assessing your product management acumen 3. Navigating the organization 4. Influence and the art of being a product manager 5. Who is the customer? 6. Garnering industry and competitor insights 7. Getting from here to there: product strategy and roadmaps 8. After strategy: what is next? 9. Execution: developing and launching products 10. Harnessing data and running the productโs business 11. Improving your experience as a product manager

Helpful - I'm in Product Strategy
I moved to product management from the industry (higher education) and it is certainly very different. Although I read a ton, and watched a ton of videos and such, it is nice to have a reference that is pretty plain speaking to refer too when I have a question. This book gave me a good foundation that complemented a lot of what I read. Doing product strategy is a bit different than product management so I don't always get the level of depth that a PM would get - and that's where this book really shined as it allowed me to get a nice framework that was fleshed out enough to empower me to ask questions and make observations. I also was able to learn the lingo (and yes it's just as full of acronyms a higher ed!) There is plenty enough in here to give you a firm foundation - and I'd recommend it for someone thinking about moving from the industry specific areas to the software space.

Helped me better understand product managers I interact with...
I felt like I was having communication breakdowns with some product managers I interact with, and I began to wonder if there was something about how they approach things, or something about their job, that might be contributing to that breakdown. For me, this book provided a chance to understand their perspective, to broaden my thinking to help me better communicate with them, it also allowed me to see how they view a project... for me, it was like realizing they are looking at a life-cycle.

Gives a solid overview of the PM role
It was nice to read Steven Haines view on product management. Another good book for anyone wanting a solid overview of the product manager role... "Many people confuse product management with product development, and some confuse product management with project management... ..The system of product management touches and influences all the organic supporting structures-all the business functions. Think of the human body; product management is in the circulatory system, the neural network, and, of course, the command and control center (the brain)." Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos says "We see our customers as invited guests to a party, and we are the hosts. It's our job every day to make every important aspect of the customer experience a little bit better" "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts" - Winston Churchill And the final nugget from the book "measure twice, cut once".
