THE TROYES RAINBOW CHASER IS CLASSIC GARAGE BAND ROCK
The Troyes "Rainbow Chaser Complete Recordings (1966-1968") should stand as the blueprint for vintage local Garage Rock. This great band from Battle Creek, Michigan had both songwriting and performing chops and they deserved to have their fine songs on the national charts. The songs "Rainbow Chaser" and "Love Comes Love Dies" certainly got plenty of airplay on local radio station giant WKFR Keener 14. Their first single, "Why" / "Rainbow Chaser" was recorded and issued by Phalanx Records out of Portage Michigan. The record stayed on Keener's top 40 chart for two months and reached number 3 the week of September 22, 1966. The band and their original manager couldn't keep up with the demand so the mother of band member Lee Koteles took over as manager and brought in old friend Ray Anthony who had his own record label through Capitol Records called Space Records. This got the band a mention in Billboard Magazine. The Troyes then recorded eight songs in Detroit at United Sound Studio with the hope of releasing an entire album. At this point the band were getting many bookings and even opened for The Turtles in May of 1967 in Battle Creek. They also appeared on various bills with The Seeds, The MC 5, And Terry Knight & The Pack who went on to be Grand Funk Railroad. Once they played at the Rooster Tail and used the instruments of the house band The Lamplighters whose guitar player was a young Bob Seger. In January of 1967 "Rainbow Chaser" was issued nationally on Space Records. All of the band's recordings are included on this cd and all are unreleased except for four songs. All were taken from the original master tapes and were remastered by Cicadelic Records out of Tucson, Arizona. The booklet is filled with great Troyes memorablia.(My family and I lived several blocks from Troyes band member Gary Link. Their Collie kept running away and coming to our house. It happened five or six times until the Links finally gave up and gave us the dog!) One of my greatest memories of The Troyes was going to see them at a battle of the bands in the parking lot at the Columbia Plaza in Battle Creek. They played on the back of a flatbed truck! As you can probably guess they won. This cd is a must have for any fan of classic 60's Garage band Rock so get this while you can.

Great 60's Organ driven Rock at it's best
Great 60's Organ driven Rock at it's best! I was a childhood friend of Gary Linke and moved at the end of 8th Grade. We continued to keep in touch through the years and in High School discussed the different Rock bands we were in. After all of these years what a great surprise to have all of their music on a CD. l have finally heard Gary and the Troyes! This is a wonderful representation of classic 60's Rock & Roll from a talented group of musicians!

What mid-60s garage band fuzz sounds like.
If you wanted to have someone hear what fuzz-based garage rock sounded like in the mid-60s, then 'Rainbow Chaser' is one of the best examples. Their major song - after which the album is named - has the driving organ that makes you want to get up and dance coupled with a lead vocal that is equal measures of snotty and sullen. They also had decent chops on the transition towards psychedelia as the organ sound moves towards something more like Iron Butterfly. The liner notes are the usual band story: form the groups; lose a member or two; have small success; try for more and disappear. What is different is the band elected to breakup because - if the liner notes are correct - they didn't care for the growing popularity of psych-music.There is naught about the songs production save who wrote what. This is disappointing because the track sequence doesn't seem chronological as therte is kinda poppy stuff at the end.

Try Out The Troyes - Worthy Mid 60's Fuzzed Out Garage
What a pleasant surprise. The 24 tracks compiled on this dandy collection from this Detroit-based garage - psych band were recorded between 1966-67. Rainbow Chaser (not the Nirvana-UK's song) got regional play but no national chart action. Certainly as catchy as anything being released at the time by bands like The Leaves or the Electric Prunes. You get three somewhat different versions of Rainbow Chaser so you can REALLY soak it in. The minor hit aside, this is a wonderful collection of period garage combining a little fuzzed out guitar here and a little Byrdsy jingle jangle there. The Good Night and Morning of the Rain could be Hook tracks as is the fuzzfest final track - Corn Flake. If you are partial to the American Breed, you will really like Turn Around. I guess the bottom line here is that this obscure band was talented, avoided covers and delivered an interesting mix of sounds and styles - drenched in mid 60's garage.
