You Can Play Jazz Piano #1-Getting Started

This DVD has a lot of really great information. He starts with the basics of scales, finger positions, triads and inversions. He is excellent with putting this information into the context of jazz playing. I'm only 1/2 way through the first viewing, but am really enjoying it. The pace moves very quickly. A true beginner on the piano would find this too advanced. But someone who has a little music theory and piano experience would be comfortable. Highly Recommended.

Wonderful Content!. Poor remastering of VHS. 60 cycle hum in one channel. Bernhardt is great and presents a wealth of material!

WB is a fine pianist and educator. His three volume set supplies the self-motivated, intermediate pianist with enough instruction in jazz theory, reharmonization, improvisation, comping, soloing, etc., to last a lifetime. Given the various costs of private lessons, a bargain at many times the price.

Nice playing, but very poor explanations. A beginner would be totally lost. Starts with extremely basic point or two, then, "I assume you know chord structure..." Then says that he is embellishing, and while it is nice and sounds good, doesn't explain what the embellishment is, very frustrating. Nice guy sitting at the piano, laid back conversation. I wish I could say something better, but I can't. I could also rant about it, but I'll hold back on that also....

I've been trying to teach myself jazz for several years. I've got a few more years to go. This DVD is certainly helpful. Still, it represents years of study by Warren and demonstrates that jazz is not acquired in an hour-long lesson. This will help you fill in some gaps. But, it cannot be used as a stand-alone lesson. It assumes a certain basic knowledge of chords. In fact, you should be fairly adept at reading chords from a fake book before this will be helpful to you. I've been through this volume about 4 times, and pick up something new each viewing. It has a cursory overview of ii-V-I progressions, blues scales, building a melody, walking a bass line, and using a scale to improvise. Each one of these subjects could be a three-hour DVD.I give this volume a 3 star--not great, but not bad. It's certainly worth $25.00 bucks having Donald Fagan's comp'er sitting at your piano for an hour.

I've always been a fan of video presentations. Warren's work is one of those that keeps you involved and interested. His development of the ideas is a nice step-by-step approach to improving one's facility as a performer. You can't help but improve your technique and musicial knowledge with Warren's work. Well done!

Warren Bernhardt, "You Can Play Jazz Piano 1: Getting Started," DVD, Homespun, 2004が大いに役立ったので、感謝をこめてレビューしておきたい。　内容は、優れたジャズ・ピアニストが、ジャズピアノの初心者を対象に、助言をし、奏法の解説と実演とを行うものである。鍵盤を弾く指使いを、頭上のカメラが写し出してゆくのが嬉しい。全般的助言では、バッド・パウエルやビル・エヴァンズのような優れたジャズ・ピアニストの録音や、バッハのインヴェンションのようなクラシック・ピアノの録音をしっかり聴き、聴きながら自分も弾いてみると良いと語り、演奏するに当たっては自分の耳を判断基準にするのが良いと語る。奏法については、手首・手・指の使い方、三声コードとダイアトニック・スケールの使い方、四声コードとダイアトニック・スケールとを使うポピュラー・ソングのアドリブ演奏の仕方（演奏例は「枯葉」）、トライトーンとブルース・スケールとを使うブルース曲のアドリブ演奏の仕方（演奏例は「C・ジャム・ブルース」）が取り上げられる。他にも、三連符感覚によるスイング感の出し方、自分の弾いたフレーズへの自身による応答、テンションノート、インナーノート、グレースノートの使い方の実演など、有益な技巧が90分にぎっしり詰まっている。繰り返し観れば、観ただけ多くを学べる。なお、字幕が付いていないので、英語のリスニング力が少し必要である。　私に特に役立ったのは次のふたつである。（1）ポピュラー・ソングのアドリブを行う場合には、「左手で押さえているコードを見て」（！）スケールを考えながらアドリブをするのが良いという助言である。私は、この助言と、アドリブは「即興演奏」をするのでなく、メロディーの骨組みになっている重要音のつながりを意識しながら「変奏」をするべきだというMartin Taylor, "Complete Jazz Guitar Method Compilation," Fundamental Changes, 2019の考え方とを組み合わせて、アドリブをするのが楽になった。（2）ブルース曲の演奏（テーマとアドリブ）を行う場合には、I、IV、Vのコードとそれをチェンジしてゆく際に、左手は3度と♭7度または♭7度と3度のトライトーン（全音3つ分でできる音程）を平行移動させながら適宜テンションノート（9, 11, 13度）を加え、右手でブルース・スケールを弾けば良いという助言である。これによって、私の弾くブルース曲は、ジャズブルースの響きになった。これらふたつの他にも、手が小さくて左手でルート音と10度の音とを同時に弾けなければ、小指でルート音を弾いてから親指で10度音を弾いてかまわないという指摘や、左右の親指を軸指にしながら、両手を左右に捻ったり、広げて振ったり、手首ごと前後移動したりすれば、鍵盤の広い範囲をカバーできるという実演も有益だった。　このDVDを見るのには適当な練習段階があるように思う。私自身は、定年退職後に時間にゆとりができ、それまで入門段階に留まっていたピアノを毎日1時間ほど独習し、3年ほど経過したときに、以前に購入していたこのDVDを見た。ピアノ独習の目標は、メロディーと推奨コードとを載せる"The Real Book I~VI," Hal Leonardを参考に、好きなスタンダード曲（「唄もの」とブルース曲）を、ジャズ風に独奏して楽しむことだった。3年のあいだには、"Alfred’s Self-Teaching Piano Course," Alfred, 2008で基礎を学び直し、David Berkman, "The Jazz Harmony Book," Sher Music, 2013でジャズ和声の基礎を学び、Jeremy Siskind, "Jazz Piano Fundamentals," Jeremy Siskind Music, 2021のなかの多くの箇所を練習してあった。左手でコードを適宜展開しながら、右手でメロディーを多少変奏できるようになっていたが、アドリブが自在にできないのが不満で、ブルース曲がジャズブルースらしく響かないのも不満だった。その頃このDVDを見て、容易に理解もでき、役にも立った。
