This album is the definitive statement of the Tropicalia movement in Brazil. The album's collaborators - Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Nara Leao, Gal Costa and Os Mutantes - mixed psychedelic rock with boleros, sambas, bossa nova and jazz into a carnival-esque parade which first announced the new global sound of Brazilian music. What is stunning is that this anarchic and groundbreaking release was recorded at the height of the Brazilian military dictatorship, during an era where censorship, repression and the threat of violence was a constant in all (musical and) daily life inside the country. Rolling Stone magazine in Brazil has voted this album no.2 in the 100 Best Brazilian albums of all-time. This classic album is Tropicalia's manifesto - a fantastical syncretic fusing of psychedelic rock & pop, Brazilian traditional music and the avant-garde.

Should Not Be Missed
"Bread and Circuses" is a sort of compilation originally released in 1968. The bread is wonderful, and the circuses are way beyond the Beatles' novelty effects on SPLHCB.It's a stunning record of some great musicians and great music. One of the best Brazilian records ever, imo.

Pays Tropical
Un moment très important dans l'histoire de la musique populaire brésilienne. Un grand bravo! pour les années 60, avec Caetano, Tom Zé, Gil et tous les tropicalises.
