Orvis Encounter 5-Weight 9' Fly Rod Outfit (5wt, 9'0", 4pc)

This is a great set up to get you started in fly fishing, the rod a reel perform well. The drag is very smooth, I’ve brought in rainbow trout in the 15-20 inch range with this set up and it handled them beautifully. Two years in with this setup and I don’t see any reason to spend money on an upgrade. Orvis is a great brand you can’t go wrong with!

You’re getting an Orvis quality product with a beginner combo price tag that is worth the money. I’ve fished it several times and it holds up well each time. It is well crafted and doesn’t leave you wishing you would have spent more money for something different. My only complaints:1. The reel is plastic. I wouldn’t normally settle for that, but at the price point, you’d be hard pressed to find a better combo for less.2. The reel seat seems to be centered around using the reel it comes with and only the reel it comes with. I’ve tried a few other reels and none of them fit in the seats quite right. I would have to file down the tangs on a different reel in order to make it fit properly.3. Even though it’s an Orvis product, it does not come with the Orvis warranty. This is probably the worst pitfall for me personally. Fly rods notoriously almost always end up with broken tips or guides at some point because of the heavy line weight and because they are so long. But again, at the price, it’s not too ridiculous to replace or pay to have it fixed if something were to happen.I would highly recommend this as a spare or as a rod for someone who is just getting into fly fishing.

I'll start off by saying I'm not the best fly fisherman, but this outfit does make the learning curve easier. I'm impressed with the rod and casting is a breeze with it. The Reel is a hard ABS style plastic so its strong, but I'll probably change it for a aluminum reel. Overall this sub 200 dollar set up will get you on your feet and make you love fly fishing.

Bought this package before my first time fly fishing. I’m obviously just a novice so I can’t tell you what’s better about this set up than others, but the setup and travel tube were so easy, the weight of the rod was great for 6” to 20” cutthroats that I caught on it. Worth the money for a nice beginner setup that seems like it will last.

I m in Alaska, the rod got here 5 days sooner than scheduled which is a major plus for. Also it got here un damaged another plus. Although I won’t be able too use it for another week or so do too the creek still braking up. I live 5 minutes away from a trophy managed rainbow creek I can’t wait too test it.

Second time out I was stringing my line and pulled the loop throw the last eye and the tip broke. Hopping orvis warranty covers it. Ruined a day of fishing.

First rod and I love it

Received today, 2 days ahead of schedule, It was snowing here in Wyoming but I live 30 yards from the Wind River. Of coarse I went right out a tried it out. Smooth casting, excellent balance and line control. This IS NOT a beginner's outfit as advertised. Preforms as an expensive rod costing $100's of dollars. Very happy with it.
