Good for small systems. *by W***R on May 1, 2024* I have a Monoprice Pure Tube Amplifier ... which I run through Klipsch bookshelf speakers. The idea of my system is not to shake the walls, or let the neighbors know what I am listening to. I wanted the warmest/highest quality sound, so I could play some vinyl on my Fluance turntable. While I cannot personally afford to be an audiophile, I'd like equipment which at least compliments my growing record collection in a way that stays true to the warmth and crispness of the medium. One issue with the amplifier is that it runs only 10W per channel ... which equates to about 50W. Most subwoofers these days run 100 - 300W ... so finding something in the 50 - 60 W range was tough. If you run a higher Watt subwoofer, it won't damage the system, but it's a waste of money, so this was the perfect amount for my small tube amplifier. Klipsch speakers tend to a be a little on the bright side, which can get grating. I wanted a subwoofer to give me just a small punch of bass to round out the sound and this did exactly that ... no more/no less. At first, I was suspicious that this was even working. I didn't feel any rattle on the shelves or vibrations on the floor. However, after turning it on and off while the song was playing, it became apparent that this was working and rounding out the sound nicely with some much needed lows. If you are looking for something to really 'punch' you ... the way some subwoofers do ... this is not it. If you have a smaller system with limitations on the number of Watts, it's adequate for your needs. While I do wish it gave a little more punch, it does what it is supposed to and I am not surprised in either direction as to its performance. The louder your system plays, the more bass will come out of this. As my amp isn't really designed to be played loud ... and I don't use my system's volume knob much past the 5 o'clock position, even tweaking the actual output knob on the subwoofer won't make my living room sound like a Dolby theater. This was a bit larger/heavier than I thought it would be, given its 60W performance. I own an Altec Lansing speaker set, which includes 2 small speakers and a subwoofer and that subwoofer is about 1/4 the size of this one and packs the same amount of punch. I'd prefer a Klipsch subwoofer, but given the small output of my amp, the added cost (3x what this costs) wasn't worth it to me. Where I really notice this from a sound perspective is classical music, especially with a cello. On rock and roll music, such as The Rolling Stones ... or on pop music, like The Weeknd, the lows it produces kind of blend into the music and aren't extremely perceptible unless you turn it off and on. Once you do, you'll appreciate having this. Most true audiophiles aren't fans of bass ... which is why the best speakers are on the bright/crisp side. For vocals and guitar solos, bass usually gets in the way and takes away from those parts of the song. If you are a rap music, pop, R&B fan who wants to dance along to the music, you'll likely want a subwoofer which is a bit more dynamic and less crisp. Pricewise, like the size, I think it's a little more than it should be. Given its limitations, I'd expect this to be more in the $50 - $80 range. However, there aren't many decent subwoofers out there lower than 100W, so I guess the north of $100 price speaks more to the novelty. I have owned many Monoprice products. While they in no way would ever compete with a Klipsch or B&W speaker/system, for a budget price, they perform better than generic/unbranded sound equipment. While their claims of being 'equal to' some of the bigger names in audio equipment is not really accurate, they'll give you a decent piece of equipment at a low price. Overall, I can't really sing this thing's praises too highly because it is truly not amazing ... or a difference maker.
