There is no plastic covering for this and I can see where it will eventually get "dirty-looking" or unsightly with regular cleaning. The phones that we used to have were those cordless rechargerable and I could not find the base, so I had to get new landlines because we realized that if we had an emergency and had to call 911, we needed a fast way to call that did not involve running around the house trying to find a cell phone. So I went to desertcart and found old faithful AT&T trimline. They arrive quickly. These are lightweight plastic, but functional. I doubt we will ever use them, but they worked. One hangs on the wall in our laundry room, and the other sits on the desk next to our bed. There is a slider to control the ringer volume. I put it on the lowest setting, which I hope is OFF. So far, I haven't heard it ring, which means either it really is OFF for the sound or telemarketers aren't calling me. Either way, this is exactly what we needed for a great price.
