Not So Excellent solution to a remote filter installation - UPDATE!!
Our 250' deep well brings up a lot of fine sediment. For years we've had to use filter pitchers for our cooking and drinking water. They are ok and all but they take forever to filter enough water to cook with. After discovering the Rusco spin-down sediment filter we decided to give it a try. My problem was that I had to install it in the crawl space beneath our house. That meant I had to crawl down there whenever the filter needed to be purged. Alternatively, I could have run a line outside from one of the crawlspace vents and put the ball valve there. However, in the winter it gets down well below zero and the ball valve would likely freeze. So I also got one of the Automatic Flush Valves and that solved the issue nicely. I mounted it near the filter in the crawlspace (which is insulated to prevent freezing) and ran the output line through one of the vents to the outside of the house. The filter totally removes the sediment and the flush valve totally clears out the filter. I have it set for a flush every 8 hours. Finally, clean, clear drinking water!09/03/2016 ----UPDATE----Six months ago this thing started leaking and it is not covered under the warranty. I'd stay away from it. You can get much less expensive parts to do the same thing. I was quite disappointed to find out that the only part that moves isn't covered by the warranty. The replacement valve is almost 50 dollars. It's a brass ball valve, not a gold-plated one!The valve pictured here will do the trick nicely. I used this remote control and a 12 VDC wall-wart:https://www.amazon.com/ELENKER-wireless-Control-Transmitter-Receiver/dp/B012ZR49LQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pl_foot_top?ie=UTF8to control the valve. This system works like a dream and the whole thing cost less than the replacement valve from Rusco. With the remote I just push the button and hold it for a few seconds to allow the ball to open, then release the button and the ball returns to it's closed position. I can flush the sediment on demand. I love it.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Y1ZAKS2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1QBFNU8WH93ZYSo before you go blowing almost 400 bucks on this Automatic Flush Valve, give some thought to perhaps building this remote-controlled one for around $35.

Does the job well!!
Many options for draining at various intervals. Does the job nicely. When I called Rusco's office in Florida I was disappointed with the receptionist professionalism when asking some questions. However, the unit works great.
