It needed to be one that would be strong, long lasting, polished smooth with a nice patina, not be prone to tarnishing or leaving marks on the skin or clothing, have a secure clasp that would be easy to open and close, and not be prone to kinking or knotting. And, of course, it had to be a type, diameter and length that would look good with most pendants.According to my research on the strongest types of gold necklace chains: Wheat, box and rope chains are generally recommended for pendants. Of these, wheat chains are thought to be the most durable. Each type of chain has different characteristics that make it a desirable choice, depending on the characteristics of the pendant. Rope chains are the heaviest of the three and great for larger, weighty pendants. Box chains are like little open cubes that reflect light. The 1.3 mm round wheat chain I bought will be just right for medium size pendants. It is against Amazon terms to link to the article, so I thank and credit Lilian M. Raji, the author, of 'What Is the Strongest Chain to Wear With Pendants?' for the information.I considered what karat of gold would be appropriate, and learned that 14K is harder and more durable than more pure gold. To me this is important if a chain will be worn often... less chance of it picking up fine scratches that dull its appearance over time. 14k or 18k is recommended for pendant necklaces.When buying a gold chain, it is important to note whether it is solid gold, plated, hollow, or gold filled. Of these, solid gold is the way to go if at all possible. Also, certain types of chains tend to get damaged or broken... from experience I avoid Omega, herringbone and snake chains. In my care they are much like house plants...sad and pitiful after a short time.Upon inspection, this chain met and surpassed all my requirements at a very good price, and was very nicely presented in a sturdy box for gifting. I loved it from the moment I saw it, but didn't have anything to add to all the other positive reviews that mentioned the wonderful patina; that it was delicate, but seemed sturdy; and soft, with no kinking while sleeping; and smooth, no catching of long hair; etc. The other day I experienced something new to write about. I bought this necklace to hold two very meaningful and irreplaceable treasures. The chain is long, and it hangs loosely when I bend over. I have lightly caught it several times on different things. This last time I hooked it, and without realizing it, I stood up fast, enough to actually put two slight bends in it and kink (so it was sticking out) one of the strands in the chain by az bend. BUT IT DIDN'T BREAK! If it had, I very likely would have lost both of my treasures. The other good news is that I very carefully pinched the bends (about an inch apart) with small pliers and almost completely erased them and was able to push the kinked (not broken) strand back into the body of the chain. It is only noticeable to me in certain light.
