Review: OUTSTANDING picture day or night, camera is adjustable so it is pointing exactly where you want it. - I've installed hundreds, maybe over a thousand car stereos for family, friends, countless customers and every once in a while, I even get to do one for myself (I went NUTS! LOVE IT!) BUT! This review is NOT about the stereo, but this backup camera. Connecting your camera's power, ground and video feed wires as well as routing them CAREFULLY *IS CRITICAL*! IF interested in how I do this, read on. If not, skip this paragraph although unless you do this all of the time, i recommend reading this. You are going to want to go to the hardware store, Lowes, home Depot, ACE...does not much matter where BUT! You want a 1/8" fine thread 1/2-1" nut, bolt and washer. Having blue Loctite is recommended but not required. You will need sandpaper (I use roloc discs on an angle grinder as you will need to mount the ground wire to the chassis (unless you want to find a ground wire nd solder into it, I find it easier to find an inconspicuous area, usually behind some felt or a panel to mount the ground wire. you'll also need a pink marine grade 1/8" ring terminal with the marine grade being important as once you crip it and ensure you have a solid mechanical connection with the wire in the crimp, then use your heat gun or a lighter if you must to get the tubing to shrink and the glue to melt, ensuring a weatherproof connection that will not pull apart or corrode. You will also need a little bit of paint (as close in color as possible although this is not critical as you're not going to see it anyway but you can't leave the metal you removed the paint from to bare metal exposed or t wil rust! Well, I LOVE it has a separate power connection which allows me to simply tap into the backup (reverse) lights ) ALWAYS TEST before you cut ANYTHING in a modern vehicle and KNOW WHAT WORSE you're after as if you probe the wrong wire on a modern vehicle with a CAN-BUS system, you can easily FRY thousands of dollars worth of electronics! Getting to the back-up light socket on most vehicles is a bit of a task, but if you're not certain which wires are which, take the time to take it apart to identify which wires go to the back-up light socket and which one is power as you're going to want to strip 3/8" of insulation (no need to cut the wire!) and solder your camera's power wire to the stripped section and then carefully tape the soldered joint and pair the wires for about an inch to prevent ANY stress from causing the tiny little wire to break. This camera also has a separate ground and i highly recommending sanding an inconspicuous area so sheet metal so you are ensured of an electrically GOOD ground (high resistance will cause a voltage drop and adversely affect camera performance......if you simply attach the ground to painted metal no matter how tight you make that connection, I promise you there is a voltage drop/high resistance so remove the pain to bare metal. Drill an 1'8" hole, use a marine grade pink small (1/28" eyelet) crip connector, crimp it on, use a heat gun to shrink the tubing and melt the glue begin to show outside of the shrinking connector to ensure it is now waterproof. I ALWAYS use a stainless steel fine thread nut & bolt with a small washer. I use a tiny dab of blue Loctite where the nut is going to be when tight as I *NEVER* want it to come loose and I am able to tighten them to 31 inch lbs as that's TIGHT, won't snap the small nut & bolt and GUARANTEES ME it is never coming loose! I will always paint any bare metal I sanded off for the ground, trying to match the color as well as possible even though i am doing this in an inconspicuous area, usually behind a felt or plastic panel but I want to ensure there's no rust as that will lead to high resistance and a voltage drop. I am a PROFESSIONAL mechanic (from the M1 Abrams Main Battle tank and loads of other military machines/vehicles to 27 years as a garage owner with my ASE Master certification along with the to go with degrees and countless OEM (GM-Ford-Toyota etc.) classes and certifications. I have 39 years of professional experience. Once you have your power and ground done, make sure you run the wires under trim, if possible (usually requires tools to remove the trim without breaking it) and IF there's metal clips that are what hold the trim down, you MUST secure the wiring so that it CAN'T be pinched or cut when you reinstall the trim. They make little plastic squares that have little hooks that will hold the wiring with 3m double sided tape on the back. you make certain the surface is CLEAN, peel the stickers off of these wiring holders and simply press them in place. They adhere well to clean, relatively flat surfaces very well so this part is easy although very important. You want to ensure this camera is working 10 years from now and carefully routing the wiring guarantees that IF there IS a failure, it will not be due to your installation! On vehicles where the license plate is on the rear decklid (trunk) I will drill holes (generally 1/4") and use christmas tree push pins that have a zip tie so that you're securing the wiring to the decklid, ensuring you leave enough slack so that the wire is not stressed when the trunk is all the way open as well as closed. I always use 3M super 33 electrical tape (never stretch the tape to break it! CUT IT!) and I will tape the wiring that will be flexing (this will include the power, ground and the video feed cable, tape all together) to prevent the wires from breaking easily due to repeated opening/closing of the trunk. Make CERTAIN to use the least amount of wire possible so it is not easily snagged/broken by people putting things into.out of the trunk or on and SUV with a tailgate and the license plate on the gate while ensuring the wire is slightly loose when the trunk lid or SUV gate is all the ay open as well as all the way closed. I REALLY HATE needing to install cameras in trunk lids/SUV gates as it is a LOT of work!) and now, you are ready to mount the camera and run the wire to your stereo or monitor! This camera has 3 wire loops and if you read, you can cut these wires depending on what you are using this camera for. i highly recommend reading about this! hose wires are NOT a defect in manufacturing, they give you multiple ways to use this camera and cutting 1 or 2 of those wires will change the resolution, remove the parking guidelines (for when using this as a front camera into a stereo that allows you to record. My stereo has 4 camera inputs and all are recording front, rear and each side of my vehicle as video does not lie! The camera is incredible for the price! I have a great picture night and day and it it very clear. the camera IS adjustable, simply twist it so it is looking directly behind or in front of you and not pointing up too high or too low. Like ALL cameras, the most difficult aspect is getting power and ground and routing the cables. On some vehicles this is an all day job, when done right! It IS a very good camera though, and does everything I need it to do. I just installed it, so I can't offer any insight into how long it will last, but I have no reason to believe it won't last me for years. I do recommend this, it seems to be well made. I dislike the "cheap" video feed cable but for under $20, you're not going to get a 20' high quality RCA cable! The cable this camera comes with is ALMOST "standard" industrywide. Be careful when plugging the RCA connectors in as the will break if they're stressed or if you pull down on the RCA connector as you install it. Enjoy!
