Although not easy reading, I enjoyed the book
Although not easy reading, I enjoyed the book. If you are interested in theoretical psychology (as opposed to "self-help" types of publications) you will enjoy this. It offers a view that allows understanding many disorders that Freud's theories simply do not address. If you have no grounding in psychological theories this may be heavy going but if you persevere I think you'll much to appreciate in this book.

Restoration.
This book went really deep about the 'Self Psychology'. It is about making the Therapist well, before the Clients could benefit from the therapy. timely delivered in good condition.

Technical and (not wishing to sentimentalise) also beautiful.
This is a boldly written extension of the classical model. It does not contradict Freud, but complements the traditional account of the structural neuroses with striking new insights about disturbances in the cohesion of the self. Kohut writes eloquently, dispensing with much of the jargon and equivocation that characterises The Analysis of the Self (which, I'm sorry to say, should probably be read first in order to lay the ground work for comprehending this text properly - eat your greens!). I love that Kohut takes epistemology so seriously, placing his theory of how clinical knowledge is generated at the heart of his therapeutic approach i.e. via empathic attunement. I have been struck by how applicable these ideas are when working with 'complex' cases. I would highly recommend this to all, but particularly to any practising therapist who has not already digested this.

Kohut brings a precision to the psychoanalytical process that many others could learn from. Look, listen, learn.

A complimentary approach
I just finished a very short course in pastoral care and we touched on object-relations. I wanted to now more and this book was very helpful.
