It would be almost as easy to build a 1/8 inch plywood box instead
This book is about a fairly simple cardboard dulcimer. It would be almost as easy to build a 1/8 inch plywood box instead. The instructions on making the neck and fretboard are easy to follow. Using ideas from this book and the internet I have build two dulcimers now. (Not a stick type dulcimer) Well worth the money.

Make a cardboard dulcimer for practically nothing.
This is a book on how to build folk dulcimers designed by Ray Jacobs. It's wonderful to read if you like to make folk instruments, as I do. Good directions, plenty of photos , plans and explInations for anyone with a modest workshop to build these funky cardboard and wood instruments I expensively. The author also gives sources for strings and tuning machines, which is a nice touch. Stories about Ray are scattered thruLug hour the book too. It's interesting just to read it.

The first pages talks of fourth grader easy to follow instructions
The first pages talks of fourth grader easy to follow instructions. Then he had to go and use the Lords name in vein. I do not understand why such language is needed.

Nice through instructions
I purchased Kiko's book from Ray when I took his class this last week. He does a great job of bringing the class to life with his writing. My dulcimer sounds great. I'm having fun learning to play.

Musicians love it!
I have been both playing music and dancing since before I could speak, and got to hear a few of these hand-made gems at a conference.I have heard a lot of instruments of the "backpacker" or kit variety, and have made a few dulcimers from kits. They are fun to build, and even to play. But one couldn't really call them musical instruments. They are something different. Fun and instructional, yes, buthard to compare to the real thing. When I heard the Ray Jacobs Rocky Mountain Dulcimer, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only do theysound great alone, with good resonance and good intonation, they blend well with "real" instruments, which says a lot.Get this book.

A Treasure1
Wow! What a find this book is - for any teacher, student, lover of music - that's all of us! I've heard Shirley and Ray play on the instruments he makes and the sound is surprisingly luscious. Fourth graders can make these instruments; anyone can. The instructions are detailed, step-by-step, and there is a good photo for each step. And when you have your instrument in hand you will even be taught how to begin playing it. Ray and Shirley Jacobs are well-known in their area for their performances, simple life-style, and generosity.
