Jennifer Weiner gives us a humorous look into the human condition again, and I loved it!
I've quickly become a Jennifer Weiner fan. After reading one book, I can't read them fast enough. I love how she inserts characters from other books periodically, as cameos per say. It's just that little thing that makes you feel like an insider because you've read all of her books. That being said, I love the characters designed for this story. I love the metaphor of the title that also had real life indications. I love the way she brought together several different strains of family relationships into the story. Jennifer Weiner always shows us the human side of the characters. She's shows us good and bad people. She shows us emotionally traumatized people and takes us through their healing. It's a wonderful thing to be able to tap into real human emotions and bring them to the pages of books. Weiner also adds a sense of humor to her tales of what is actually tragedy. The character of Maggie is something I've never seen anything like. She's the kind of person that most people would write off, not write about, but Weiner gives us a story like none other in the transformation of a misunderstood girl who needed to find herself. Rose is more of a standard Weiner character, but nevertheless, she is the kind of person that we all hope we turn out to be.I will continue to read this authors books, because they enlighten me to some very interesting areas of the human condition, and I love the sense of hope and happiness that her stories leave me with. Good job!

Enjoyed very much!
I first tried the movie in long time ago. Being already visualized the main characters, I started reading the book. And I enjoyed! Rose and Maggie represent each other's weak points, and once they face what she herself like and what their sisters like, they start to build new sisterhood. It's so hard to love and compete your sister, knowing she is your sister but she has what you want. I believe there are many readers find themselves similar to one of the characters.

Chick lit with brains
This book & I have a long history, well not so long anyway now... I remember searching for a new book to read on the internet one day & came across a book site which reviewed chick lit. Now, being an ignorant person that I was (& am still) I had no idea what chick lit was exactly. Soon, I learned that it included `Bridget Jones's Diary' amongst other pastel covered books with shoes & other such things that I generally do not care about. However, I wasn't cynical about it despite the fact that I couldn't relate to the genre's heroines so I decided to read `In Her Shoes'. I ended up enjoying the book though it didn't cause me to delve deeper into the chick lit world at all.So, considering that 2010 is the year that I read anything & it's the year that I've officially started reading romance novels, I felt it was high time for a reread. The basic plot of the novel is that two sisters differing from each other in almost every way aside from their taste in shoes (oh come on, you know it had to relate somehow to the title) both deal with crises in their lives & are deeply affected by a tragedy in their childhood. Maggie is the younger sister, drop dead gorgeous, unstable, & dyslexic while Rose is older, wiser, smarter, & a successful lawyer at a top firm in Philadelphia. There is sibling rivalry, & a betrayal, each character is faced to deal with their own vulnerabilities that have been growing inside them since they were young. This is a novel more about healing & the importance of family connections. Also, it's about how you can't cover up the past, you can't pretend it didn't happen no matter how unpleasant it is. `In Her Shoes' will make you laugh at times, cry a little, & make you wonder if you're in the right place in your life or not.

Hugely Disappointing - a slow and depressing read
Despite the fact I love the author and many of her other novels - I HATED this book.It is incredibly slow as many others have mentioned, but also very depressing in that the characters are so unlikeable and the situations so nasty from beginning till end (who thinks of extorting their grandmother for godโs sake?), not to mention the triggering scenes with men this book left me feeling stressed and depressedโฆ It finally picks up in the very last chapters of the book and thankfully that was a fun finish but felt very rushed and thrown in.I would recommend skipping this one and picking another book of herโs or another chick flick style if you want a fun read.

I loved the movie
I loved the movie, and when I read the book, I loved it too. Interesting to note how different the movie and book are, not just in terms of plot but also in terms of character. The two sisters are both deeply flawed women in a dysfunctional, co-dependent relationship, and ironically it is only when they become estranged that they each realize their full potential and self-worth, and the depth of their love for one another. Had Rose continued to put up with and enable her sister's destructive behaviour, they each would've ended up unhappy and alone. Weiner treats her characters with sensitivity and compassion, and her writing is engaging and makes you want to read the book to the end in one sitting.

Good read but 'Good in Bed' still better
I think this one rare situation where the movie was better than the book - the book still captures the style that I like about Jennifer Weiner but it isn't as absorbing as 'Good in Bed' and i think the movie really took its strengths and reduced the weaknesses while still delivering the same message (good job!). That said, if you like this author then this is still a good read, but tend to agree with other reviewers that Maggie is more of a horrible person that could be tolerated plus there were parts of story that could have been missed ie meeting up with the characters from 'Good in Bed' as that didn't go anywhere. So 3 stars as my litmus test is do i want to reread it straight away, do i keep thinking about it afterwards? (even for chick lit) at this point i would say it'll be a while before i feel like reading it again, compared to 'Good in Bed' and others.

Sisters at war.
This is a book I would reccomend if you want to read something that requires minimum concentration. Two sisters, one - serious, sensible and 'frumpy'. The other - ditzy, mean and ever so slightly 'loose''. Sensible sister Rose allows her VERY different sibling Maggie to move in after she was evicted from her apartment and fired from her job (again)! The two struggle to be around each other and eventually an act of betrayal involving Maggie and sisters boyfriend causes them to shun each other. Can they ever repair their relationship and find a common ground?A typical Geek vs Beauty queen first half and a bizarre story to follow.. a lot of the incidents in this book were so random that it was mildly frustrating at times - I also feel it was far longer than it should have been. Otherwise, not bad for a light read.

the book is great, you really get to know the characters and ...
Forget about the film (which is also quite good), the book is great, you really get to know the characters and can completely understand them. It is funny and sad without being sentimental, and for anyone who has sisters, the relationship between Rose and Maggie is perfectly represented. It's a shame it is marketed as 'Chick-lit' because it is way better then that implies...It has a plot for goodness sake! and it doesn't revolve around the girls relationships with men, Give it a go....
