Excellent book to cut your MDX teeth on
I am a Database/BI Developer by trade and have spent 5+ years designing and building data warehouses with SQL Server. Although I have experience building cubes in SSAS, I never had much reason to go beyond the 'drag and drop' building of MDX queries in the cube browser and SSRS. Finally I wanted to add more MDX to my skill set so I looked at a number of books on Amazon and this one looked like the level I was interested in.It's probably not for anyone with a year+ of MDX writing experience (though you might pick up a few things), but it is a great start if you only have minimal exposure to the MDX language itself. I started with an understanding of Data Warehousing and how to design cubes, and felt this book wasted no time jumping right into actual MDX syntax that I wanted. If you don't have a knowledge of DWes and cubes, you might be a bit lost.Within the first several dozen pages I felt I had a better understanding of MDX than many hours of perusing articles on the internet. Though the book is a bit 'short' compared to many other IT books, it gets right to the important stuff. It very concisely lays out Concept > Query > Results > Analysis, which is a very effective way to teach this topic. I would have liked if had been a bit longer and went into some more complex real world applications (it has real world applications, I just would have liked even more) - but its only billed as an intermediate book anyway.Very happy with the purchase.

Excellent Resource
I have a thorough understanding of T-SQL, but as we are implementing a new Data Warehouse I needed to become familiar with MDX. After trying to deconstruct the queries I was just not making much progress due to the language differences. Online resources were not giving me what I wanted. Decided on this book and it has come through. It starts off with the most basic query and gives the result set. It then adds a new 'line' and gives a result set with explanation for each modification. This is a very concise way of passing the knowledge and exactly the type of detail I wanted and needed. Highly recommend this book for any MDX beginner.

This book is a great help in self-teaching MDX
I know SQL and had always heard that's a hindrance to learning MDX. This book is very handy though, starting very basic and slowly but steadily increasing the query complexity. I am already feeling more confident about writing and understanding basic MDX than ever before, and still have most of the book to work through. This book is a great help in self-teaching MDX.

Does the Trick
This book does an excellent job in taking the complexities out of learning this difficult language. I highly recommend this book for beginners. MDX has not changed so just because it is 2018, don’t worry about that. This book will getting you going in your MDX endeavors.

... at work introduced me to this book as the best beginner book for MDX
A colleague at work introduced me to this book as the best beginner book for MDX. This book gives the reader a gentle, frustration-free introduction to MDX. The numerous sample queries in this book are accompanied by screenshots and summary notes which makes it easier to understand the concepts. I wish I bought this book earlier! Highly recommended!

Really good book.
I am new to MDX and this book really got me going. I would recomend this book if you are new and want to get started. I was able to understand named sets in SSAS and wrote a top 10 now anyone who uses it doesn't have to try to build a top 10 they have it applied from parent to child.

Watch out! There is a download limit
Do not bother buying this book for your Kindle. This is on my kindle at home, but when I tried to download it on my PC at the office it told me I have exceeded the limit on the number of devices that can read this item. WTF! I cannot reference this book when I need it, and I paid a high price to use it on a limited number of devises. Do not waste your money. Beside a PDF is available from other sites at a much better bargain.

Just lots of examples
Just lots of examples. If that's how your mind works, great. Some theory for each chapter follow by examples would have made more sense to me, but could still prove handy if I need examples.

As it says - practical
I really liked the gradual, systematic development of concepts, each with clear and simple examples you can step through to help you understand. It covers most of the language functions.

Gute Wissensvermittlung

Good book with straighforward and useful examples
This book is what it says in the title - full of practical examples of MDX that you can use to solve problems and as a basis to create your own solutions, can't say more than that apart from to recommend buying if you want something that doesn't waffle and gets to the point. 4 stars only because you just want more examples after you get to the last page, book is not the usual mammoth tech epic :-)
