Art of Violin Playing: Book One

I absolutely recommend this book to anyone learning or practicing violin. The book is written conversationally with a pragmatic approach. If you're not used to reading very dry nonfiction, I highly recommend taking it in small chunks, as no sentence is paragraph padding.

This book is rich in detail about playing positions, tone reproduction, and practice techniques. But while there are some pictures showing posture, fingering, etc. in Appendix A, it would be difficult for a student who has never studied music theory or played the violin to truly grasp the concepts.For intermediate or advanced students, however, this book will reinforce the instructions of teacher-led study and help the student enhance their playing skills.If you are an adult just starting out with violin play, I suggest you instead pick up The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner.

Detailed and precise it includes plenty of pictures or examples and explanations. Methodical approach to all the questions that come with learning the violin. Between this and the book called "The Green Violin: Theory, Ear Training, and Musicianship for Violinists" you're set.

Every violinist needs to read. History, scales, science and pedagogy mind-set ... this book is really a one stop shop. Don't waste money/time on the various shorter books--all one needs is this masterclass book!

Not really for the advanced player. It goes over how to play scales, how to hold the violin etc...

This book is extremely thorough and even though it is translated it is a very good read and gives a lot of insight to violin playing and technique. It is a very large book and takes some time to work through. There is an accompanying 2nd book as well.

What a fascinating reference! The translation has such vivid, strong language. It's exhaustive breadth is tempered by a conversational, sometimes playful tone, making it easy to read and understand.If only a companion recording were available! Buy it. Underline it. Make comments in its margins.

This is a method book, but "method" is never mentioned on the cover. It was an expensive purchase, but I bought it. It is boring and I hate it. I've tried to re-sell it and no go. Anyone want it for cheap?Otherwise, it is being round-filed.

This is a great volume of very detailed information about violin playing. It is a book that can be useful for intermediate players upwards.

It always amazes me how much we can learn from the past - and this reprint of The Art of Violin Playing is no exception. Well worth reading though.

Great book, serious technical building within the book, I just dislike the double column format.
