BTS The Review: A Comprehensive Look at the Music of BTS Kindle Edition

The media could not be loaded.  I don't have much to add to other reviews based on the content itself. Kim Youngdae is very knowledgeable about music, not just regarding genre and theory but also the cultural context in which it occurs. So he offers great insight into the BTS phenomenon and how their music has contributed to it both in Korea and overseas. He uses interviews and essays and editorials sprinkled throughout in between the music review itself to build that context for readers and it's a very effective format.It's a shame Amazon doesn't provide a feature to "look inside" the book because I think just a few pages will have you hooked. So I've included a video. It also gives you an idea of the quality and beauty of the physical book itself.Highly recommend for any ARMY and I'm really looking forward to his follow up book once there is enough material for a sequel!

I devoured this book. The structure is great: It goes through BTS's discography and offers criticism of both the records as a whole and individual tracks. I loved the essay chapters the most. Kim has a distinct set of strong arguments about BTS's appeal. I find myself thinking about his ideas—about BTS's authenticity, about Big Hit's emphasis on the members' individual artistic identities, the group's hip hop roots, etc.—a lot. The author is eloquent and extremely intelligent and does a nice job with the guest interviews. I hope to see more serious criticism and analysis of BTS like this moving forward. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of Bangtan as a worldwide phenomenon and as artists.(One small complaint I have is less about the book itself and more about some slight editing sloppiness/grammatical awkwardness throughout. It wasn't enough to hinder my understanding but worth knowing going in.)

This is my favorite book about BTS. It is well researched and thoughtfully written. This is the book I send to any of my friends when they begin their journey into exploring BTS.The author clearly knows BTS, their music, and the industry well. The only issue I had was the presence of Jeff Benjamin, but it something you can skip over.Looking forward to this author's next publication on BTS. The recent profiles of members was great, too, and I'd love to see it printed.

I expected this to be an in depth look at the music of BTS. Instead, there is a short paragraph of technical information about each song listed. I spent a LOT of money for something that really doesn't interest me. If you're look for background stories about BTS songs, this is not it!

Even tho I know them since debut era, I only listened their music without knowing anything about their personality and only know about Jungkook and RM. I learn about them around Skool Luv Affair era when Just One Day MV just uploaded by BigHit, and I fall in love just like that. They became my motivation through every hardship that I've been on my early university's life. Thanks for being there boys! Thanks for all of your hardworks too! Thanks for colouring my life.

Talk about comprehensive! Absolutely everything is included in this book.

I'm old school and this is my preferred way of discussing music with folks, and I really appreciate that this author took the time to do an english version for us!

For those starting out in this rabbit hole that is becoming a BTS fan, this is a very good overview of where BTS fits in musically in the history of pop music.

When I turned the last page of the book, I wished it were longer. That to me is one of the most defining ways of judging which book I liked reading. Also the book was such a smooth read. Though I wished there had been more written about their songs, both more in terms of the description of the given songs as well as some of their other songs that they made for festas (I know, Daeng, 4'o' clock etc) or collaborative works (come back home, change etc) or the beautiful originals they released only on soundcloud (promise, scenary, danger mo-blue mix). Overall I enjoyed the book and read through it in one sitting. Hopefully the author will later write a follow up book chronocling BTS journey further through the years.Among the given literature that approached and analyzed BTS through a largely superficial lens, this book was a welcome surprise.

This is an excellent book if you are new to BTS and looking for more information! It talks about their music, their achievements (as of 2019) and gives insight to their journey to Global Phenomenon! Highly recommended! 💜
