That was fun!
No one will mistake the Greetings from Somewhere series for great mysteries or great travel books but they are fun light reads for the 1st and 2nd grade set as they graduate to chapter books. With some illustrations, straightforward plots and some new and exotic places these books make a good transition. Each book has the Briar twins Ethan and Emma traveling to a new country and solving an age-appropriate mystery while learning a bit of history and culture. In this case they are off to Paris where after trips to the Louvre and Eiffel Tower they have to solve the mystery of a stolen painting. My kids enjoyed the details about food and culture and the interaction between the twins. I was really happy when I picked it for a bedtime story but the kids had already read it on their own!My only recommendation is if you haven't already picked up this series you might want to get the "Greetings from Somewhere 3 Books in 1!" volume instead since it has 3 books for just $9 or so.

Our children love this whole series and they have been the subject ...
Our children love this whole series and they have been the subject of several book talks/reports they've given in elementary school. There's nothing scary, the Ella and Ethan have interesting adventures, and the plot is easy to follow.

Prompted my daughter's non-mandatory/fun reading
Although very bright, my 8-year old daughter read only when instructed to do so and for the exact minimum time. We chose this book (not online) as her class Library time book: she likes purple and since "Home" she wants us to visit Paris. Well, it went the way of all previous books: flip through, put down. About 3 months after she came home from school: "Mummy!! I reach chapter 5!!" I doesn't understand the comment or excitement coming from her. "I don't have homework can I read in the car going home and until bedtime!?!" I think I was smiling too much to say yes and just nodded.Next evening after school: "Mummy! I finished the book!" I asked her when she got time. "I read during recess and lunch time". So we went to the mall and got 1, 4-7. She read 4 and 1 within the next 7 days or so. Couldn't find 2, 8 & 9 here so I ordered online from Amazon.I got her to underline words she did not know... she's matching the cover colour with the colour pencil. So we discuss the pronunciation and meaning. She also summarizes the stories verbally for me.Wished it sold as set/sets. But still reasonably priced. So we have 1-9. Got 1-3 "Race the Wild".... Both educational books for children with international span. Looking into "Critters Club" as she loves animals. Don't want to be without the next read.

Good for kids who need a little push.
Got this for a child with a little reading difficulty and she loves it. The little bit of adventure,a little dash of mystery and the simple story line can catch and hold a child's attention effortlessly.
