The Great Wall of Lucy Wu

Funny Asian American protagonist
My teaching partner and I were wanting to add thoughtful diversity to our read aloud lists and this book is perfect. Lucy is sassy and funny and real and the other characters play off of her in a real and sometimes amusing way. The situations that Lucy finds herself in are realistic and her thoughts are relatable to fifth graders. The Issues she has with her heritage are genuine and explained in a way that is easy for fifth graders to understand. My students loved this book!

Lovely book about Asian culture, sports, body image, food, and family
The Great Wall of Lucy Wu is a humorous, immersive middle-grade book with a memorable protagonist. Lucy Wuโs middle school trials and the struggles of being caught between cultures stand out. This book also examines Chinese history and culture in an accessible way, and encourages children of mixed cultures to give their parentsโ cultures a fair chance. I would highly recommend The Great Wall of Lucy Wu to any readers who enjoy books about Chinese culture, funny protagonists, sports fiction, and books with loads of food references.

Good read wether your Asian or not
This is a great book for Asian kids. especially chinese kids, they can relate to chinese school and being pressured to quit sports for something more academic. But you can also relate if your not chinese, how your must include people, or giving others a second chance. This is a GREAT book, I wish I could give it a ten star but the highest this goes is five, so I guess that's all I have t o show how much I love this book. 100% going on my favorites list. You should read it, you never know it could soon be on your favorites list too_

Nice simple book
This book is a great book about a girl who desperately wants to get what she wants but her hopes and dreams get crushed by her grandmother's sister ,Yi Po. I myself love playing basketball, and being a Chinese kid whose height is about 128 cm, I understandhow Lucy feels about being the second shortest girl in her class. It was a very nice simpe story which I enjoyed very much!

The Great Book about Lucy Wu
Using this book with a student working on reading comprehension skills. Terrific story, tons of tier 2 vocab words and idioms, no questionable language, and it teaches good character, good attitude, friendship skills, gratitude, and not judging people on looks alone. Very enjoyable read, especially for bilingual English-Mandarin speakers (but knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is not necessary). Highly recommend!

I Love Lucy!
LOVED this book! The voice of Lucy hooked me from the start, and remained strong and true throughout. Her family dynamics were relatable and charming. Plotting was perfect and the ending could not have been better. Such a necessary read. I can't wait to share it with my former students and to buy more books by Wendy Wan-Long Shang.

?????
This book is good, but the conflict with the TP-ing is never solved. Not really. Ms. Shang is a very good writer and I really enjoyed this book. But I still wish that she'd totally finish that problem instead of leaving it (partially) incomplete.

I am a librarian and read this book to do a book talk.it reminded me of the story, The War with grandpa. It was a great story. Could also be used to discuss culture as well as family life and girls stories.
