Simple, brutal, wonderful
This simple, brutal little tale is clearly the work of a beginner author, but the artwork and the spirit of the story shine through. It's short, blunt and to the point, and leaves you wanting more, which is exactly what I always want in a graphic novel. This story reminds me of Lynd Ward's wordless novels like "Madman's Drum" and "God's Man", simple, desperate tales in which the protagonist is doomed before the story even gets going, where the situation can only go from bad to worse. If you're looking for an uplifting ending you've come to the wrong place, but still, an interesting and compelling story from a fledgling author that would later go on to write some excellent graphic novels.

Raw and full of heart. Not the typical comic book but a fine first time work.
This is not a commercial product. Its the first comic book written and drawn by a cinema student who decided that wanted to pursue another interest in life ( read Lemire's intro before reading the book ). The drawing is raw and thick. Its pure ink. Black, white and red. However this style goes so well to the story, a heartbreaking tale about love and the ties that binds. Its a sad story with a sweet sour ending. This is not an action comic neither the main character goes on a revenge rampage killing everyone who hurt his family, this is a drama, a violent tragedy in a search for inner peace. If you are used to independent comics you will love it. If dislike comics that are grounded on reality this will not be your cup of tea.I am very pleased with this book and definitely will buy more written by Jeff Lemire.

not bad for a first shot...
simple and sa·li·ent review. just saying.i first discovered Jeff Lemire on the book The Nobody and was an instant fan. this book was basically his first comic more or less and it's a pretty good go.the art is a bit rough around the edges bust still very close to where he's at today.the story is ok, nothing great but like i said as an early work it's not bad and has some great moments.my only gripe about this book is the binding which is not to good, just out of the box new it was coming undone/ pealing apart.otherwise it was a nice read. if you enjoy this check out his other works cuz they only get better.

Amazing despite reviews
I find it fascinating.that people would not like this book in its entirty. I find it visually pushing every point foward although crewd at times. The rich blackness gives the very feeling of the despair that is taking place in this story. Lemire does a great job of keeping it tight simple and enough depth to make me feel for the protaginist. I would definitly recomemd it to any lemire fan. That even interested due to it being his first. So for what it is a comic writin in short format in his first venture out. My only gripe is that the binding was ridicolous the glue on the inside that hold it together was just liquified. Didnt hold up so I.had to super glue it to my dismay. But all in all haopy

Jeff Lemire's Beginning
Nice little tale that won Jeff Lemire a Xeric award. If you're a fan of Jeff and his work, definitely check this out! It's cool to see where he came from, and how his style and storytelling skills have evolved to become the great writer/artist that he is today. The only thing that bothered me, was his art actually. It was a love/hate thing, I loved the energy in it, but at times it got a little too messy for my taste. But other than that, fantastic stuff!

So much packed into a few pages.
A dark, gritty, relentless study in remorse, grief, rage, love, and resignation. An amazing first effort by Lemire. It is rough around the edges, but that roughness plays into the mood of the story. "Lost Dogs" is a harbinger of Lemire's subsequent works like "Essex County" (his masterpiece, in my opinion) and "Underwater Welder". A great read.

Wow, I Was Expecting So Much More
Every review or blub I've read about this book lead me to believe this book was hard-hitting, and powerful. I didn't find that to be the case at all once I actually read it. The story is supremely bland, The dialogue stilted, characters very one dimensional. I know people may think to themselves that it's a comic book and what did I expect, but the fact is comic books have a lot to offer; comics is a storytelling medium that's just as capable as any other. Horrible things happen in this book; yes the story's dark, bloody, bleak even, but that doesn't make it powerful, nor compelling. A simple story is fine, which this is simple, but unless you have characters with enough dimensionality to get the reader invested then you're just introduced to a dark dank world with no one to care for and no and nothing to tether you emotionally to what happens within it.

An emotional gut punch for fans of Underwater Welder or Frogcatchers
Let me start by saying that the art is rough in this. Even a devoted fan of Lemire's art like me can admit that. But if you are a fan, then you can see where some of his more popular work came from with this book, and that gives it some worth. The story is the thing that really carries this book though, it's an emotional gut punch of a book. Lemire excels at family heartache, and you've got all you need right here.

Whilst not at his current dizzying heights, still a solid read
You can really see his style coming through in this rough early work, in contrast to his current thin, sketched pencil style the art in Lost Dogs is done is wide brush strokes and the only colour is the occasional splash of red. Whilst following the Lemire standard of unusual parental relationships as found throughout Essex County, Sweet Tooth and the Underwater Welder this one is a much darker and considerably bleaker tale. Well worth your time for anyone who enjoys Lemire's work.

Touching simple story of the brutality of life.
Touching simple story of the brutality of life. Worth having in my collection to balance out the mayhem of "The Boys"

A "origem" do Jeff Lemire
