Tricky first if you haven't used one before but fantastic after
Same product as in brick and mortar hardware stores. If you never used this design it may puzzle you.Take out the bright green cap!!!Basically it spout opens when you push the spout against the gas tank opening rim when filling tank. There is a "LIP" on the bottom of spout at the top opening. You flip .over the carrier upside down. Don't worry gas isn't going anywhere. Now insert spout into gas tank of mower or golf cart Etc.Turn the bright green ring on bottom of spout so spout can move/slide freely up and down. You place that small lip.on gas tank opening rim, push the carrier down on it and voila, gas is pouring. Lift up carrier just a touch, gas stops running.

Extremely Poor piece of Junk
Right out of the box, it didn't work. The green ring was hard to turn. The black tube was hard to plunge. Holding the pieces in my hands, I was able to turn the green ring and plunge the black tube, but not all the time and certainly not without trouble.Eventually (within 10 minutes), the two pieces of the black tube separated. Trying to put it back together forced the safety flapper (which prevents gas from pouring until in position) was pushed out the bottom.Maybe I can get it back together and maybe I can get it to work as it is supposed to work. More likely, I will have to get rid of the flapper so that gas will pour freely in all circumstances. Which means it will operate as the old style of gas cans -- except that it has a very short spout which means I'll be spilling gas or using a funnel.Extremely pour (ha ha) piece of junk. The one plus is that the container itself is very sturdy and will last for years if not decades. Too bad the government-mandated pouring system is such a horrible disappointment.Would definitely not buy again.Update: I was able to reassemble the pieces of the spout. Now I can get the plunge the black spout as I pour gas. The bad news is that now I cannot turn the green ring at all. The black tube does plunge, but it doesn't return far enough to clear the green ring. But it plunges.Additional bad news is that it leaks. With the top securely fastened, it leaked from the seal of the spout while I was carrying it home from the gas station. When I noticed, I stopped and cranked down the cap even further, and I was able to walk the rest of the way home without it leaking again. When I poured the gas, though, it still leaked. I'm almost 60, but I'm a big guy. I turned that cap beyond the point where it catches the safety clip which prevents the cap from unscrewing itself. I got it about a quarter turn past that point, and it stopped leaking.I wouldn't be happy with this gas can if I got it for free.Another Update: There are two comments to my review. One is from the company offering to make it right. The other is me turning down their offer. Sorry. This is like a bad relationship. I don't want you to make it right. I want you to go away.I have a gas can that is designed to last for decades, and I have a spout that didn't work right out of the box. And that means I need another gas can. Junk. Pure junk.

Not for Arthritic hands but good product
OK GREAT ITEM , STRONG BUILT , ONLY PROBLEM IS THE SAFETY OVER-KILL ON HOW THE SPOUT WORKS ----HAS TWIST OPEN FEATURE SQUEEZE CAP TO TURN -AWKARD ,,THAN THE CAP GASKET HAS TO BE SEATED PROPLY AFTER FILL UP OR LEAKS , A "O" RING WOULD BE BETTER ,, THAN TRYING TO POUR FROM THE CAN HAVE TO TWIST AND PUSH NOZZLE THING IN ORDER TO POUR INTO MOWER / GENERATOR GAS TANK ...I RECOMMEND THAT YA GET A AFTER MARKET SIMPLE POUR NOZZLE WITHOUT ALL THE SAFETY OVER KILL ,WAL-MART HAS THE SIMPLE ONES FOR ABOUT $3.59--

Handy gas can, works as described in instructions
Haven't experienced difficulties or drama in the several weeks I've been using this can. The can I received had instructions clearly printed on a sticker on the back of the can.The spout dispenses a decent flow of gas, as one would expect from a spout of this size. To avoid overfilling, when I notice the level in the fuel tank of my pressure washer is nearing the top of the tank, I stop pouring. To top off, I add a few short bursts (1-2 seconds each). Each time one stops pouring, the green safety collar usually slips back to its locked position, as it's supposed to to prevent spills. To prepare to pour again, one just turns it back (a bit to the right) to its unlocked position. It's a slight inconvenience. It's important to vent the can before use. When I neglected to do this a couple times, the partial vacuum that developed inside drew in the sides, as if the can were beginning to cave in. After I noticed the dimples and vented the can, the sides gradually expanded and became flat again (this process went faster when I left can out in the sun for a short time). The green dust cap isn't attached to the spout with any sort of tab (if it were, I suppose the spout couldn't be inserted into the can for compact storage/transport), so one has to take care not to lose or misplace it.

Not impressed
Was disappointed in the filler spout. It was prone to leaking. It was also difficult to dispense. I'm not certain if this is the design that's required, but it was often simpler to remove the spout and use a funnel to put gas in my equipment. Warning - if you plan to carry gas in the trunk of your car, use a cord or other means to stabilize the gas can keep it upright as when it tips, it can leak quickly. Mine seemed to have a poor seal between the filler and the threads on the can.

Good Gas Can - No Spill - Read the Instructions
I purchased to compliment my other Briggs & Stratton Smart-Fill can for lawn equipment. Many reviewers like the old cans but they leak and overflow. If you read the instructions you will not be frustrated. This can never spills or overflows. The 5+ gallon can is cheaper but I like the size of this one for ease of pouring. You don’t have to invert the spout into the can when buying gas as it will not spill in the trunk. I would buy again.
