Cheaper blocks (not always cheaper in price) are made out as I described above. After a month or so daily use, you will find them starting to disintegrate, especially if you aren't careful to carefully dry them after use. OSMA blocks last me about 10 months. They finally get so small and the edges so tiny, that I'll get distracted by the dogs wanting to eat or my wife asking a question and I drop it in the sink and it shatters. But even as a tiny bar... It never loses it integrity. I still dry it off daily with toilet paper and keep it in a plastic case from a cheap block that I got years ago when I first started wet shaving. Three separate gifts could be given. I hope this helped. **Q: Are the blocks in a plastic case?** A: No plastic case. It comes in a cardboard box. I use the same box when I travel in lieu of a plastic container. I'm not a fan of the plastic containers, any moisture trapped in the plastic case will dissolve the Alum. Stops nicks instantly, closes pores, can be used as an antiperspirant/deodorant; I cannot in good faith recommend that for it though, it is basically aluminum. Great stuff though. I've discovered something natural to replace the very brief time I used this as a deodorant, but if you do use it as such you will not smell that is a fact.
