first!
just received the set and am still working my way through it. first impressions. the print and image quality are excellent; up to the same standards Steidl set with their other Eggleston books. and the set is a pretty heroic feat for both Steidl and the Eggleston family (who edited images and sequence): at 588 pages there are a staggering number of photos here. almost more than can be digested, even taking the volumes one by one. comparing Los Alamos Revisited with the original, I'm struck by the differences in narrative impact--there's an open question for me as to whether too many photos is just too many, that the punch of the original publication has much to do with its limited number of images and the expanded version loses something in the dilution.but, a minor pt. I'm happy to have a new trove of previously unpublished images, and I'm betting--given that the images were carefully sequenced in Revisited and reflect the story William Eggleston wants to tell---reading Revisited is intended to be a very different qualitative experience. maybe comparing the original and expanded versions is just apples and oranges. I'm curious to hear others weigh in.short version: if you're considering purchasing this, cost aside--definitely do.also, per the editor's note at the end of the third volume Steidl is planning to publish a 5-volume set of The Democratic Camera next Fall. And I'd heard the Eggleston family is reviewing the Election Eve portfolio for possible future publication (the Gagosian Gallery recently exhibited new dye transfers from the series). so, it looks like all parties are in for the long haul and fans can look forward to a wealth of never-before seen photos for the next few years. always a cool thing.

Fabulous volume of Eggleston...fabulous. Packing left much to be desired.
The book, all three of them, represent an amazing volume of work from Eggleston. And if I were asked which body of work from him is my favorite I think this would rank at or near the top...I'm still getting through Chromes. An aside, but an important one if you decide to order from Amazon. My book was ordered when first available at Amazon and took several months before it finally shipped. The not so pretty part was the complete lack of care given to packing this large, heavy and expensive book. And yes, it was damaged when it arrived...the shipping department tossed the book into a box inappropriately large for the book and threw in some air filled pillows. The box was given its usual throttling in the UPS system and arrived predictably effed up...it didn't have a prayer. My chat with customer service was less than satisfactory - they would replace it but informed me it would be over 3 months.Sorry, if you are reading this to learn whether to buy the book or not. Let me say if you know what the work is about and are considering the book then just get it as you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for the book to be given care in packing for shipping you would be well to lower that expectation. Its a dice roll.

A Really Magnificent Work
As an object, it's up to Steidl's usual high standards and the images are mesmerizing -- the uniqueness of Eggleston vision really registers when seen in groups and this is a REALLY BIG GROUP. At 588 pages and 19 pounds, this three volume set isolates the visual quirks that most of us miss. The Russian Formalist literary critic Viktor Shklovsky developed the concept of defamiliarization and it certainly applies to the strangeness of the everyday world that Eggleston has captured. I spent hours with the book yesterday and can't wait to get back to it today. As a photo professor with keen interest in photobooks, I can't wait to share it with my students -- it impresses me and I bet it will even penetrate the skulls of my super-cool Neo-Milliennials.One reviewer complained about bad packaging of his copy. I'm happy to report that my copy was packed with the care that any valuable object should receive. The slipcase was contained in a custom-sized corrugated box within a corrugated shipping box packed by Steidl. The Steidl box was was inside a third corrugated box packed by Amazon. It arrived in the same pristine condition as it left Steidl.

Pure Color
"Los Alamos Revisited" is a worthy successor to the wonderful "Chromes" set published in 2011. When the now shorter version of the Los Alamos book was originally released the publisher's description noted that the images were "shot in Eggleston's native Memphis and on countless road trips across the American South from 1964 to 1968 and from 1972 to 1974. Initially, Eggleston wanted to create a vast compendium of more than 2000 photographs to be contained in 20 volumes; he wanted the viewer to look at the photographs the way one looks at the world. He eventually abandoned this project--and hardly any of the negatives were ever printed." That book was 224 pages. This new collection is 588 pages and brings us the closest to what Eggleston originally imagined and is a visual treat. The printing, binding and presentation are all first class and well worth the price. Highly recommended.

Costly but hell yes, worth it!
Pushed into the deep part of my wallet to get this puppy and glad I did, especially now that the price has just about $120 more than when I bought it a few weeks ago. This book is a monster and now sits with its brother, Chromes. Take your time and you will be rewarded. Skip quickly and you were think you spent a lot of cash on a bunch of snapshots. I'm a huge fan of classic black and white, but Eggleston has shown me why color is powerful when in the hands of someone who knows why.Packaging issues - none...the folks at amazon have fixed this issue and copy was very well protected.

A whopper of a compendium of America at that time
Bought this after seeing the recent show devoted to him at The Met. Even more great photos than The Met's relatively small exhibit space could accommodate, although I have to say that nothing beats seeing them in person. Especially those reds!

Amazing book. It feels as if you are walking ...
Amazing book. It feels as if you are walking along with Eggleston on his misadventures and explorations. To me, these volumes offer insight to the way he works. Highly recommended.

No text
The reproductions are superb, but there isn't a word of text in any of the three volumes, a bad misjudgment by Eggleston and his editors.

Beautiful photo books by a legend
I quite literally discovered William Eggleston by accident earlier this year. I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and having walked around for a few hours, I was ready to leave, when the last exhibit just before the exit was a feature of Eggleston's works. I walked and I had never seen such beautiful photography.Eggleston is known for making images of everyday scenes - gas stations, parking lots, cars, etc. Even though many of his photos do not include people, I consider his work as an early form of street photography. At first, the photos might seem boring, but you really have to take a moment to appreciate how he uses colour, how he frames his shots and his perspective. This collection might seem expensive, but it is well worth the price. The prints are high-quality on really good stock paper. Highly recommended for anyone who loves photography.

Capolavoro
