At 2 1/5 she figured out how to hit the kick drum at the same time. At 4 she found her first beat. The drums can adjust in height to accommodate a kid in to the the late pre teens. It pretty good quality but wont withstand a junior Keith Moon. If you youngster is a slugger brute type, i would recommend a set of congas instead. If you can teach the kid to hit light and hit for tone, than you all will enjoy this kit. **Q: How old should the kid be?** A: Ours son is 10 years old and he has enjoyed this set. They offer a free online lessons program, but he has not done anything with that yet. **Q: can you buy replacement parts or pieces? ie hardware,stand, or even a drum replacement** A: Yes, the company that I made my purchase from was very responsive. **Q: Is this a good size for a 5 year old?** A: I will have to Yes, with as fast as they grow it may be a slight bit advanced for right now, but it certainly won't take long before you would be looking at one like this anyway. It really is not all that large of a set, it just has one of everything with it. Happy with the one I purchased for our 10 year old.
