Q: is this inverter 120v , 240v, or is it split phase?

It comes set up to put out. 240v, two legs of 120v. It needs at least 230 v DC to start.

Q: My 11-year-old 2500U in a 3kW system has died; can a 3000 be swapped into its place?

From the SMA website: "If your eligible inverter is within warranty, it will be replaced at no cost. The SB1100U, SWR1800U, SWR2100U, SWR2500U, SB3300U, SB3800U, and SB6000U are currently eligible for the SMA upgrade program. SMA will even dispose of your old inverter properly in order to comply with electronic waste disposal laws."http://www.sma-america.com/service-support/service-for-home-systems.htmlIf it's out of warranty, yes the 3000TL-US would be a good replacement

Q: What does it take to monitor the output of this device / connect it to the internet?

Monitoring the device is pretty simple. It has a built in small window screen on the front face of the inverter that continues to scroll through the data output. Connecting it to the internet is a little more complicated. There are I believe four different communication cards made for monitoring via a computer using the internet. There’s monitoring with Bluetooth, monitoring without Bluetooth, there’s monitoring for single inverters and monitoring for several inverters.
