The Puffin Book of Stories for 5 Year Olds

Short and creative stories ! Big print !

My six year old daughter loves to listen to these stories before bed time. She will also play them during long car trips. Some of the "readers" have very strong English accents, but that only adds to the nature of the stories.

The stories aren't awful. There are no pictures, which I think a child in reception/ year 1 benefits from but that's a personal preference. That said, my 4 year old enjoys much more complex books that don't have pictures, but they are better written. I didn't think these stories written particularly well. However, the story of the king who didn't like to bathe for instance, contained a storyline/ language completely unsuitable for a 5 year old. When the main character is struggling to find a way to keep the king's feet clean and dry the king threatens him and says if he doesn't do it "zut!" When the main character asks "what is zut?" he tells him it is the sound of his head being cut off.Maybe I'm being sensitive, but my son has just finished year R but is still 4, having been the youngest in the class. This was a potential nightmare waiting to happen. If it had been my daughter at the same age, we would definitely have had tears in the night.Overall, there are bits that were okay, but all in all not worth buying in my opinion. On the positive side, it was book week and we only paid £1 for it.

Lovely stories perfect for a 5 year old-just what it says on the tin! My daughter still needs a little bit of help reading, but for story time these are age appropriate and short enough to keep her attention or for bed time- no more massive books when they should be sleeping. Plus she loved getting a book with her age on for her birthday!

My grandson is 4 nearly five . He loved me reading the book to him and it made him use his imagination as not as many pics as his usual books . He remembered all the story the next day . It was definitely the next level up of story for his age and it worked well . He asks every time he comes now

Bought for my 5 yr old son. He really enjoys listening to these stories. Well-read by the actors, we have it on in the car for long journeys and also in his bedroom for night times. The stories themselves are original, funny and with good moral points.

Brought this instead of an easter egg for my 6 year old son. He already has the Puffin Book of Stories for Six-year-olds, but it has been played non-stop and he wanted something else to listen to.He loves the stories, and each night at bedtime he listens to them - he generally will fall asleep before the cd finishes, so he next night we just jump to a story that he has not heard. The story telling on these disks are brilliant, and he loves them. I must admit, some bedtimes I sit with him listening too, as the voices etc. are brilliant.Would be ideal for travelling (with headphones unless you want to listen too), as I believe it would keep the kids entertained. Will be buying him the seven year old one when we are due to go on holiday, so he can listen on the journey.Would recommend these, especially if your child loves books and stories.
