worth it for the experienced in raku
great book filled with tried and true glaze recipes. not all glazes are documented with pictures which leaves you to test the glazes. a good amount of them are documented though and there are helpful hints and tricks to alot of the glazes. for the money id say it is totally worth it if you know what your doing with raku. if your looking for inspiration rather than recipes id suggest 500 raku. which just came out.

Good book - Could be better book
What needs improvement? The over 300 recipes do not have photos of test tiles associated with them. Artwork throughout the book in some places give the name of the glaze (ie: Copper Matt), however the name may not be explicit enough (ie: there are six copper matt recipes and many other copper matts not called "copper matt"). Some labels are incorrect (ie: "Vases" (Horsehair raku))--> these are actually two crackle vases and one horsehair raku vase. You could do without the personal statements of the invited artists. It is the wrong target audience for this type of book. It would be better to put additional techniques or photos of their work or them performing a technique that is visually aided. Now the good! Even though there are no test tile photos, the comments are helpful (ie: requires heavy reduction or thin or thick coats). There is a good range of raku colors represented within the recipes and crackles, matts and glosses. There are a good range of construction techniques shown among the selected artists (ie: slab, wheel-thrown, wheel-altered, carved, sculpted, etc.) showing how these methods are best enhanced by raku glazes. There are also many glazing techniques (naked raku, slip resist, paper clay, etc.) that are interesting. In all, the book is a good book and I would recommend it to others. I think a revision could make it an excellent book.

Fired Up with Raku
With regard to the first comment on this book, I have heard that in actual fact Gersltey Borate is availableand should be available for a few years yet There is also a substitute that is almost identical .I have heard that Gillespie Borate from Hamill and Gillespie is a pretty close direct substitute. so that should be a big help for everyone.

GO RAKU !!
A wonderful book for a great start in Raku. I love it.Charts for beginners such as: Effects of Oxides in varying proportions; alternate names of materials (Australian, USA, Europe); Health and Safety; Tips and Tricks in Raku; Glaze make-up recipes giving composition and weights - simples etc. Potter's give up their recipes. Fantastic pics.

very interesting and detailed book, but ...
The book is a very good product, explains in detail many things to know about this fascinating technique and recipes are truly many. the only problem is they are not accompanied by pictures demonstration. the glazes therefore remain a mystery, you can discover just trying.if there were more illustrations, this book would be a masterpiece.Nevertheless, it is an excellent base from which to those who work and is delighted with the raku.I highly recommend it, perhaps the only book that explains in detail the glazing
