Perfectly watchable, but spoilt by video being too dark
I was put off these DVDs by other negative reviews here. However, this is the only DVD release of Bergerac series 1, and I wanted the series. So I was in a quandary, and ended up buying the discs. I write this now to help anyone else with similar uncertainties and concerns about the quality of these DVDs.As for the episodes having been edited and cut by up to ten minutes each. Yes, this is true, but unless someone is very familiar with the original versions, I doubt they would spot the cuts (I certainly can't), and the edits don't spoil or interfere with the plot, etc.As for the video quality being poor... well, generally the quality is fine, and perfectly watchable, taking into account the age of the material. The problem is that everything is very dark. I found that turning up the brightness on my TV, and adjusting the contrast, gives an acceptable (but not brilliant) picture, but it's disappointing they didn't address this when mastering the DVDs.On a positive note, the soundtrack seems in fine condition, and is pleasantly noise and crackle free.In summary: if your objective is to enjoy (re-)watching Bergerac's early episodes, and you can tolerate the dark video, then you'll be happy with these DVDs. If your objective is to own perfect DVDs, then you'll be disappointed.

JERSEY JIM BERGERAC IS HERE AT LAST ON DVD !.
Finally this brilliant detective series comes to dvd with John Nettles set on Jersey. The plots are well written and the stories are also well acted which is rare for a cop show. Being set on the lovely island of Jersey in the 1980's also helps the show. The episodes are edited here to 40 mins when they should run to 50 for some very odd reason. But my major concern is that the transfers are poor with a grainy picture and. Worst of all there are no chapter points so unless you put the disc on pause. If you have to leave the TV you are put back to the main menu ! this effects all issues of this series. So despite this being a brilliant series I have to give this only 3 stars !.

Let's be positive
Dear readers,Although I am sorry to read the previous reviews, it was so long ago for me in Holland seeing the original versions, that I did not at all notice the cuttings. I am very much delighted that the series is finaly being put on DVD, and I think it is a very nice set. I very much hope that all fans will keep buying all seasons being released, so that the BBC does not decide to stop releasing more recent seasons if sales should be low. I rather have cut versions than no DVD's at all. Small negative feedback from me is the glueing of the box that doesn't stick.

Bergerac Revisited
I remember with great joy watching Bergerac in the 80's and then John Nettles in Midsomer. When the opportunity came to buy Bergerac DVD's, brand new, I jumped at it. The product is great, the condition faultless and the service and efficiency shown me with my order were top rate. You have a friend for life. Ken.

Bergerac Series one and two
These Bergerac dvd's are great, especially if you watched the original series - watching them again you can take in all the scenery and appreciate the lovely island of Jersey. The dvd's arrive very quickly and are very well packaged. I shall be purchasing the rest of the series from Amazon as they seem to have the best choice and excellent service, and best of all the site is easy to use. I shall be purchasing the rest of the series. Bergerac - Series 1 - Complete [DVD] [1981 ] Bergerac - Series 2 - Complete [DVD] [1981 ]

Please correct this listing, Amazon
I haven't seen this series, but from what I've read I'd like to. Unfortunately, Amazon lists this DVD set as having been released in January 2005. They then go on to suggest that it's sold out, but that we might be able to buy it in the used DVD market. Wrong, Amazon! Bergerac - Series 1 has never been available on DVD, but is due to be released on January 9, 2006. If only Amazon would correct this listing some of us might be able to enter our pre-orders.

We enjoyed the trip down memory lane
We have enjoyed the Bergerac, a real trip down memory lane!. It's amazing how pale the colours are compared with today's film. The books were presents for other people, so I have to assume they liked them, but I can't rate them myself. No problems reported with the delivery.

Arguably the best Bergerac series.
Yes I know all the series are great but I love the back drop to this series and the notions of opulence that are promoted. This series shows a moment in history and it tells you much about the 1981 viewer too. Social norms, stereotypes and prejudices.. . . great stuff. I am going off now to watch it all again.
