Today Sponge Vaginal Birth Control, Green, 3 Count

I didn't watch Seinfeld when it was airing but have seen many reruns over the years.About 5 years ago I saw the episode where Elaine buys a closet full of "the sponge" because they were stopping production and it was her favorite contraceptive. This was actually something that happened and I vaguely remember hearing about it on the news back in the 90s. I also remember a conversation about the sponge in the movie "Clueless".So when I saw the Seinfeld episode I wondered if they ever brought back the sponge and I could start using it. My decision to seek out the sponge as my new preferred contraceptive was entirely based on pop culture references. Go figure.Anyway, I found the Today sponge at CVS and bought a box. I did a practice run to see if I could do it properly. It wasn't much weirder than inserting an OB tampon. I don't typically use OB tampons but I still saw the similarities.It is pretty simple and after you insert and remove a few of them you become an old pro. You simply wet it, squeeze it gently to get it all foamy, gently fold it in half and insert it. Then you adjust it as needed so the indent rests on your cervix. Don't worry about the elastic pull string location. I honestly think the elastic is pointless for removal. I usually just squat a little, and push like it's a baby. This gets it about halfway out and then I can just grab any part of it and pull.I don't notice them when they are in there. No boyfriend has ever mentioned it (I think they like the soft squishy feel anyway). I have had multiple romps in the sack over a 24 hour period with the same sponge and still haven't had any pregnancy scares.Obviously, this doesn't protect against STDs so it is only suitable as a backup plan or when you are in a committed relationship and don't like long term birth control methods (like me).Bonus feature: If you use this when you are on a lighter day of your period, it essentially blocks your flow and you can have nearly mess free sex while on your period.

I'm not going to bash this product but proceed with caution. While it DEFINITELY WORKS (did not get pregnant), I could not force myself to continue using this. I just threw out the remaining 2 sponges the box came with because it was not worth it to me. My biggest gripe is that it ultimately altered the natural state/PH balance of my vagina. It did not leave me with any infections (got the all clear from my gyno) but I knew my body wasn't the same after using it. I had way more discharge after I used the sponge & I had such a funky smell going on down there that I have never had before. I think it has to do with the spermicidal lube but that's just my theory. My boyfriend was also not a fan. It left his penis for a few days after we used it. The process is also really messy with all the foam the sponge creates. I know that is what it is supposed to do but with the experience as a whole, I would personally not do it again and would not recommend it. There are better methods of contraception.

Surprised these aren't more popular, they beat condoms by a long shot. I use this with the pull out method and it works extremely well. Just make sure to put it in as deep as it will go, takes some getting used to. The sponge itself is fleshy and actually feels like the vagina wall. A great birth control method for those of us who can't handle hormonal methods.

Nothing works better. I have 6 kids, trust me. I have had 0 kids since using the today sponge.

I have been using these with my boyfriend for a few months now and we like this contraceptive a lot. I love that it has three ways of prevention. I think it’s a well thought out product, down to the string that helps you remove it. It does take practice getting in and out, but o crazy you do it’s like riding a bike. If you have a trusted partner, I would highly consider these.

My doctor won't allow me to use the pill anymore due to a condition I have. I already have a child and am 30 years old. I recently began dating someone and we have been using these for birth control for the last 5 months. Now that I am used to them, I love them! He does too.One big thing that helped my body become okay with using this product was starting to use a pH balancing feminine wash. Things seem overall, much healthier down there and I am able to use the sponge very comfortably on a regular basis (2-3x per week).

I loved the sponge. It made me feel lubricated,and I couldn't tell it was there once I got it in. My boyfriend hated it. He said it felt like sandpaper, so we stopped using it. At the risk of TMI, I assume someone with a deeper canal or a guy with a smaller package might have more success. Getting it out required a little effort, but I was able to do it in under a minute.

Hard to insert, all of them disintegrated in my hands as I tried to use them, flimsy is an understatement.

Very hard to remove. I tryed once and i ll not try once again. After one use i got infection as well

I hate traditional tampons, i love these sponges. Highly recommend.

For short term contraception and used correctly, very efficient, would use again.

Easy to insert, easy to remove, very comfortable. On removal the sponge does tend to tear - I suppose this ensures people have to buy them again, rather than washing and re-using with spermicide gel. Quite pricey so good job I'm not having that much sex!

I got these to try as a method of contraception, but the spermicide messes with my natural balance. Not the contraceptive for me, unfortunately.

Does what it says and does it well !. We had no problems fitting or removing item and stayed in place all night

One of the boxes was faulty - all three sponges were broken through the middle so didn't dare using them. Not sure how the refund works on amazon so didn't ask for one, but I'm shocked how this product even passed the quality control!
