This is going to be very similar to my review for the physics book in the same series (there's also a chemistry book and a mathematics book).It's an excellent series and explains basic biology for the intermediate school age or early high school age. My ten year old daughter is quite enjoying it and could just about manage it without help. It does a good job of introducing concepts such as the classification system, inheritance, evolution, cells and anatomy.There are lots of colourful pictures, examples and good explanations. I'd guess average ability children around 10 years old should be able to handle this kind of level with parental help or slightly younger children who are really interested.

Excellent, informative, funny
This is yet another excellent book from this author. I bought it for some book-hungry young relatives, but, as before, found myself reading it from cover to cover. It provides a comprehensive introduction to biology, breaking the subject down into all its differet aspects and treating each one in turn. It covers; the definition of life, the human body and how it works, plants and how they work, the origins of life (creationism is knocked for six in one of the most elegant paragraphs on the subject I have ever read), life on earth, and the history of biology. The language is simple, direct and unpatronizing and manages to make complex concepts and processes immediately understandable. The book is chock-full of photographs and whimsical, yet bang-on, illustrations, some of which are wryly humorous. With books this informative and enjoyable around, why is there any need ever for dumbing down?

Good introduction to Biology for KS2 and above.
Another science book bought to stimulate my 9 year old's interest. As with the Physics book of this series, he read it but was not overwhelmed, preferring Horrible Science books instead. As with the Physics I am hoping he will pick it up later.
