Hobby Boss Russian Navy Typhoon Class SSBN Model Kit

An excellent kit, with superb detail. While the PE props were a bit fragile, I was still able to use them. Overall, a very good purchase.

Overall excellent model kit. The only issue (common on model kits with moving parts) was the dive plane gear mechanism is pretty flimsy. For our purposes it was fine because we planned to glue them in place anyway.

Loved the open missile option. Hobby Boss does a pretty good job with submarines. This is my third one. I really enjoyed the build. The white thin stripe around the hill is difficult because of having to go over all of the water ports. Had a lot of fun and pretty satisfied.

This is not the quality I expect to find with a Hobby Boss kit. The two main body halves were extremely warped, and even getting a proper test fit resulted in sheering off several of the alignment pegs. It seems the upper half both "flattened" and twisted away from a proper fit with the bottom half. In addition, the tail fins don't properly line up leaving a pretty big gap that you'll need to fill. Forget clothespins, you're going to need clamps and rubber bands to hold this together while the glue dries. It's too bad, as this is the only 1/350 scale Typhoon kit on the market. I almost decided not to even complete the kit given its problems and the fact that almost all Typhoons have been decommissioned.

This kit has some good detailing, but not as much as you'd think for a ship in this scale. Right off the bat you'll see a bunch of design flaws. The plastic is a bit warped, so the hull doesn't fit well together. tape, clothespins, and rubber bands will be needed. The bow planes are designed to slide in and out on a clever gear system that ALMOST worked. The cement points are way too close to the mechanism and I had to glue them in the fully deployed position. The missile tubes look incomplete, and the propellers can be done in either plastic or photo-etched pieces. The photo-etched looks great but is insanely fragile. It's not all bad news, though. As a static display, it looks really good. You may want to choose the missile doors to be in the closed position, though. The hull details are solidly done. The stand is a bit low-rent, but it works. Overall, I'm happy with the kit, but I had hoped it was more. Typically, I favor the Tamiya kits, but this one wasn't bad
