## Description

A3 sized Scanning [297mm(H) x 420mm(V)], USB, 1200dpi High Speed Scanner

Review: Worked right out of the box with MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8 - I'd been looking for more than a year for an easy, cheap way to scan oversize art prints for use in a friend's art history classes. The Mustek A3 1200S worked perfectly right out of the box and does exactly what I need. I'm using the Image Acquire app from the companion CD, on my MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8. (The software claims to work with OS 7 also but I haven't tested that.) You do need to restart your computer after doing the install and plugging in the scanner. I ordered the scanner on Feb 19, 2013 and received it on Feb 21 delivered to my door. It took about 10 minutes to install, etc. and start scanning. The colors are fine. You are able to signify the area of the page to include (there's a preview scan) and there are some basic adjustments you can make using the Image Acquire app after the final scan, i.e. "enhance" etc. JPEG, TIFF, and PNG are available on save. Speed is satisfactory. It easily scanned a page from a moderately thick oversized book ... the hinge end of the lid pops up about an inch to lie flat over a book or you can remove it entirely for something really thick. This seems to be simple, easy to use equipment. Best of all, it does the job without breaking the budget. I'll be back with an update after I've used the A3 for a while.
Review: Seems like a decent scanner for the price, software... meh - Scans fast, and I like the auto crop feature on the 3rd party editing software provided on the disc. And that's the real issue here, the software. I can't speak for the mac crowd, but for me it installed very nicely on a win xp laptop, I have yet to try the driver on a win 7 machine, but I don't really expect issues. The stock control panel for the scanner is abysmal, it is literally a coding travesty. Of course people tend to use their editor of choice's import function to scan, but come on guys, try a little harder. The supplied 3rd party software does give a better control panel when importing scans, but both lack the ability to name a single file. The default controller just names it whatever it wants to, and the 3rd party one lets you give a name for each import session, but auto appends it with a sequential number. perhaps I'm just spoiled by microtek's scan wizard software that let you choose if you appended a file name and let you name the output on each scan job. Really so far I'm happy with the scanner's performance, A3 size for under 200 bucks rocks, but it seems that a lot of time gains are negated by not allowing me to make my one choices on file naming, thus costing time renaming things. I definitely recommend using the 3rd party editor supplied on the disc or photoshop if you have it, to manage importing.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does the scanner accept Mac OS X 10.9.4?**
A: i'm running it on Mac OS X 10.9.5 and using "Image Acquire" to get it done.

**Q: When you scan a book page, or pages, can you press down on the book to get the pages reasonably flat on the glass, does this affect the scanner in any way? A reviewer of a competitor's product complained that pressing down on the glass caused it to bend just enough to interfere with the scanning light bar which in tu…**
A: I have had no problems on putting pressure on the glass. The scanner worked properly. I returned the A3 1200S scanner (DOA) & purchased the A3 2400S - a little more expensive, so my observations are for the A3 2400S model. It should be OK though - same design. The only other observation I can make is that the objects must be flat - the depth of field for these type scanners, as opposed to the CCD type devices, which are at least three times as expensive, is nonexistent. But for flat objects it's just fine - and fast.

**Q: Are the edges level with the glass so that I can scan a larger painting flat against it or are the beveled outward?**
A: you cannot scan anything larger than the glass size without letting light in, which spoils the scan; furthermore the size of the scanned image cannot exceed approximately 10" x 16", although it will appear that there's more scanning area. That said, it's a reliable machine, and the larger scan area has been a boon for me. One last thing to beware of: the bottom of the machine is made of a soft rubber plastic that can easily warp if not fully supported, and, if it warps, the machine won't function as it blocks the moving part.

**Q: Can the cover be removed in order to scan larger images**
A: Yes, the cover can be removed and Mustek's A3 1200 HS still can be used to scan very large items. But, if any of the glass area is not covered during the scan, the image will have lines in that area in the file. To solve this, I recommend you use a piece of BLACK paper to mask any uncovered area on the glass. This is similar to using a copy machine with the door open, one must put down a piece of WHITE paper to mask any open glass area. Regards, Mike

### ⭐ Good enough for government work- barely
*by J***T on May 18, 2014*

Bottom line: gets the job done- but grudgingly. I recently purchased a Mustek A3 1200s HS scanner to make the job of scanning old family photo album pages easier. Due to scanner-bed size constraints on my tried and trusty Canon CanoScan LiDE 600F, I had been needing to do 2 scans per page and then use Photoshop or PaintShopPro to join the two pieces back together. Totally doable but time consuming. The Mustek A3 1200s HS scanner has really sped-up the work-progress. However! Gripe No1: like others who prefer to use the TWAIN interface and import scanned images into PhotoShop or PaintShopPro for editing, I have ZERO use for the dumbed-down Panel v2.0 user-interface that rears its ugly head every time the 1200s lid is opened! As others have noted, there is simply no way, via the software settings,to turn-off this annoying and, for my purposes, useless feature. So, here's the work-around. With the Panel v2.0 window open, I ran a ctrl+alt+delete and determined the name of the offending executable to be: Panel2.exe located in the C:\Program Files\A3 1200S Scanner\Panel2 folder. Renamed it xPanel2.exe and voila, the problem is solved. Gripe No2: Another issue I have with this scanner is that the lid isn't weighty enough to keep certain types of media- such as slightly wrinkled old scrapbook pages and photos- flat against the glass. The result being inconsistent scanning focus within the scanned image. Some areas of the image are crisp and clear. Others blurry. Apparently, unlike other features of this scanner which are sloppy and imprecise- the focal-length of the scanner-lens is dead-nuts on pinpoint! The lid however is so light and flimsy, that it is unable to keep the media pressed flat against the glass and keep the surface of the scanned-in media inside the narrow focal length of the lens. The solution is easy enough- place a medium weight tomb on top of the lid while scanning and the problem is solved. Gripe No3: It is a noisy scanner. It sounds as thought the gears and wheels are about to grind themselves to stubs. So, that's it. With a bunch of jury-rigging an working-around you can get this thing to work. But it shouldn't be necessary. Hopefully I can get what work I need done finished before the return-by date has expired. It is not a scanner that I want to keep. I have the uncomfortable feeling- due to its noisiness- that it is going to crap-out at any moment. My 2-cents worth. Hope others find this useful! Cheers!
