Solid Radio
I am a Flight Instructor and I feel that this radio is essential for me to have as a backup or just as a way to communicate with my students if needed. This is the second Yaesu NavCom that I have owned over the years and this one is as solid as a rock. Reception is adequate and programming is not too difficult. Programming software would make the job a little quicker though (which can be downloaded free from Yaesu but you have to buy the proper programming cable). The speaker is plenty loud and has a clear sound. Having the NOAA weather receiver built in is also a major plus. The only minor complaint that I have concerns the squelch adjustment. It is menu driven. I prefer a manual squelch knob on top of the radio but It is not a deal breaker for me regardless. I still give this radio 5 stars for durability and functionality.

Great transciever! Miss FM and AM though...
This radio is great for the purpose it's designed for, aviation comm! VOR nav probably useful for emergencies, but not much else. Sound quality very good. Waterproof casing an awesome and welcome addition! Just tried that feature out in the rain! I would opt for the the 700 series model so you can jam to fm and am when you are working as a pilot. Great for air show spotters!

Not acceptable
ATC reported very weak signal from right on airfield outdoors. ATIS, tower and ground reception intermittent. Effective only while near or holding antenna. Returned to seller.

Very sturdy, works great!
This handheld is like holding a rock. Very sturdy. Although I have not used it enough to drop it repeatedly, it is made very well and would likely withstand many drops. The controls are easy to use, and my flight instructor enjoys using it too. Great as a backup in the plane, and for calling ATIS prior to starting the engine to save a few minutes. Reception once you are away from the airport vicinity is weak on the ground, but have no problems picking up very well in the air.

Very Satisfied
Nice radio, sturdy and does what is supposed to. Like what comes with it, like rechargeable batteries, insert to use AA and headset adapter cord.Receives and transmits well, speaker produces clear sound.

Had this radio for a couple of months now and ...
Had this radio for a couple of months now and it has worked very well. I listen to the ATIS broadcast while Im going through my preflight checklists and it saves me 2-4 minutes of plane time each time. It will pay for itself in 3 years :-)Only issue is - if I leave it in the sun or if it gets hot, the screen gets hazy - returns to normal when it cools down.

Great radio took a little while to figure out operations
There is nothing wrong with the radio. It works fine. I seem to think it took a little too long to figure out how to use the features. So I relented and read the manual. You will want to do that too. I like the radio and just wish I could leave it charging when I'm not using it. But that is not good for the battery it says. So I charge it for a while and then take it off the charger.
