Fantomas 1960s Collection (Fantomas / Fantomas Unleashed / Fantomas vs. Scotland Yard) [Blu-ray]

Kino Lorber has done a great service to English-speaking fans of Fantomas by finally re-issuing these three 60’s films with English subtitles. Though not entirely faithful to the spirit of the original novels or the classic Feuillade films, this trilogy is a highly enjoyable comic take on Fantomas with plenty of thrills, action and style. Tim Lucas’ commentary is engaging and very informative, though he does commit at least a few errors. For example, the Fantomas character did not inspire Arsene Lupin. Lupin debuted in 1905, Fantomas in 1911. Gurn was not the name of the actor who went to the guillotine in place of Fantomas at the conclusion of the first novel, it was Fantomas’ first alias. And Richard Eichberg’s 1938 “The Indian Tomb,” identified by Lucas as “The Hindu Tomb,” was not a remake of a Fritz Lang film. The 1921 version of the film was directed by Joe May. Lang did not direct his version until 1959. But these are minor quibbles. This collection is a treat and a must have for aficionados of the Lord of Terror.

These are enjoyable films. The character of Fantomas was translated to film back in the silent era (with a great music score, I might add) and this 1960s trilogy was clearly inspired by the James Bond craze of the time. Oddly, the first film is not the same as the second and third. If seeking subtitles or English dubbing, there is no consistency with all three films. But at least there is an English rendition for all three of them in one or the other format. Picture quality is spectacular. Highly recommended.

I have searched for years for these movies and finally found them. Brings back childhood memories of growing up in Havana, Cuba.Only one of the three films has searchable chapters with additional commentary.

At first I was about to return it.The first dvd was perfect but the second one didn't play on my old dvd. My son told me to give it a shot with the xbox and Voila, it played perfectly.Wonderful memories with these movies.Thanks a lot.

I've bee waiting for years for these movies to be released in English... so I was happy when I saw all three Fantomas titles (from the 1960s) in one package. I was happier when the description said "Language: English." This was not the fact. The films are in French with English subtitles.It seems that accurate product descriptions are not to be expected, as this isn't the first time this year that an expected product turns out to be... not as expected.I still love these movies

Great classic Louis De Funes movie. Had some trouble with CDs loading, especially the third one. But at the end it worked. The movie itself is great.

I have looked for this one and other old funny or action foreign films before and received poor copies. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Great quality (not re-mastered quality but as good as original in-theater) and has the extras like English subtitles.

英語字幕があることで大変助かりました。映画としても、ミレーヌドモンジョもかわいらしさも最高です。しかもシリーズコンプリート。

小学生の頃に映画館で観て、その楽しさが忘れられずコレクションとしてVHS→LD→更にファントマ映画祭2006での劇場公開後、DVDが発売されたが資金難で思い悩やんでいる内に廃盤。その後CS放送されたものの未だに国内盤は再販されていない模様で今回の輸入Blu-rayの購入となりました。日本語字幕は無いけれど国内Blu-rayプレイヤーで再生出来ました。 画質は甘いが初作の「危機脱出」が1964年製作なので時代を考えると納得出来ます。ディスク1 「ファントマ危機脱出」＋予告編(ファントマ、3作/OSS117、3作)ディスク2 「ファントマ電光石火」「ファントマ ミサイル作戦」以上2枚組みでかなりお値打ちな価格で購入出来ました。欲を言えばオマケの特典映像がもう少し有れば言う事無しなのですが。
