Amazing book, I can relate so much now having a daughter. Didn’t think that someone would understand what I was going thru or what I went thru. Can’t wait for the sequel.

A beautiful exploration of womanhood and motherhood
Letters to My Daughter by Nancy Ruffin is a touching and intimate exploration of the themes of womanhood, motherhood, cultural pride, honoring one's ancestors, and teaching the young. Ruffin's poems and prose, conceived in her New York City neighborhood, in her home, and written from the heart, will move you and might cause a tear or two, while offering hope, life lessons, and encouragement.I recommend Letters to My Daughter to lovers of poetry collections that tug at the heartstrings and nudge us to pay attention.

A Great Connection
This book was a page-turner. As I read bits and pieces, I was able to make such a great connection. I truly believe that you can apply it to you and your own mother or even to your boys'. I wrote notes in the book of things that stood out the most. It was so real and raw as she spoke about becoming a parent, explaining her fears. I also loved the way that she touched on her faith, but it wasn't overemphasized, it was just enough! Her pride in her culture and being Puerto Rican. I can go on and on but you will just have to pick up a copy and one for a friend too!!!!

Adoration, Adulation, and Admonition in Letters to My Daughter
Letters to My Daughter, a work of poetry and prose pieces unequivocally demonstrates through the author's use of alliteration, imagery, metaphors, repetition, and synecdoche, her pride in her Puerto Rican culture, her love and veneration for her ancestors, and her ardent desire to instill (as an inherent responsibility) the same pride in the next generation. She also unabashedly exposes the nefariousness of domestic violence.Through her marvelous motifs of a vessel, she manifests her gratitude for being chosen to carry and deliver her daughter into this world. Motherhood is the ideal role for the author - her daughter is of utmost significance.Nancy Ruffin's pieces are replete with vivid images that reflect her love for her nieces, her grandmother, and all girls. Love for one's self, including one's hair texture, is addressed against the distorted view that some have of what ideal beauty is. Pride is one's ancestry and the sacred responsibility to instill pride in the new generation is disclosed through many of the pieces in this wonderful collection.
