Venom is back!
I really enjoyed reading this, I was quite entertained from start to finish. The story about how Eddie Brock becomes the original Venom again is an exciting read and the Spider-Man moments are great! (5/5)

Disappointing
Not a bad book, but the cover is essentially a dishonest con. If you're buying this solely to see the return of the original Eddie Brock Venom don't bother. What you get is a completely unrelated if moderately interesting symbiote tale, with Brock turning up completely out of leftfield right at the very end. Oh and Spidey is in a bit. Disappointing.

Back in black!
Good read and interesting to see Venom back in black! Not the most fleshed out story, but good. Gerardo Sandoval's Madureira-esque art is good and I like how he portrays Venom.

Venom: Lethal protector, or just plain lethal?
**SPOILERS**Lee Price is an ex-Army Ranger who was discharged after losing part of his hand in a foreign conflict. He was a good soldier who served his country well, but now he now lives on the streets, homeless, destitute, cast aside, and cynical. The one thing his experience has taught him is that good guys come last, its easier to take than to give, and the bad guys have all the power...The problem is that Lee Price doesnt have any power of his own - that is until, whilst acting as hired muscle during what should have been a straight forward exchange of illicit goods, things turn lethal when the selling party decides that they want the goods without rendering payment, and have come armed with every intent of getting their way!Price isnt afraid to die. In truth, after the things he's seen and experienced, he's already dead inside anyway - but in the end he doesnt have to, as he is saved by the Venom symbiote - which, dying itself, and desperate for a new host, merges with him.As the minds of Price and the symbiote link, the symbiote realises that its host is once more a soldier, much like his last one - who was one of the most decent beings it had ever met. The symbiote sees the same potential in Price as it did in Flash Thompson - the potential to do great things - but Price has different ideas...He now has the power that he always dreamed of, and now he demands control! With the symbiote under his sway, Lee Price, in order to keep his new found power a secret, slaughters his attackers and also murders not only his friend, but also an innocent witness in cold blood. Meanwhile the symbiote screams in helpless protest! Price you see has no aspirations of protecting the helpless or saving the world as his predecessor did - all he wants to do is figure out how to use the symbiote to his advantage! So, the verdict? The Venom symbiote has had a lot of hosts over the years - Peter Parker, Eddie Brock, Mac Gargan, and Flash Thompson being the most prominant ones. In Lee Price however it now seems to have a host of of a sort that it has never had before - a cold, calculating, unfeeling sociopath, with nothing but self interest at heart, who is quite willing to kill without question for no reason other than it is the means to get him what he wants. Its something we havent seen before - even Gargan, whilst a criminal, wasnt a cold blooded killer. It also provides an interesting switching of roles between the symbiote and its host. In previous cases the symbiote has always exerted a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) influence over its hosts actions, who have had to fight and use great willpower in order to avoid succumbing to the symbiotes baser and more savage instincts, but in the case of Lee Price it is the symbiote that is the prisoner as IT fights to free itself from HIS control and his selfish and sociopathic desires.Over the years, thanks to exposure to heroic hosts like Parker and Thompson, the symbiote has developed a level of nobility all of its own. It WANTS to help people, but Lee Price it appears is going to use it as a weapon and force it against its will to do harm to the innocents that it has spent so many years trying to protect.Price himself is an interesting character. He shares a lot in common with Flash Thompson. In many ways their lives are parallels of each other - both had difficult childhoods with parenting issues. Both loyally served their country. Both were injured in the line of duty. Both have their personal and social problems. However, where as Thompson eventually climbed out of that darkness, Price is a character who seems to revel in it. He isnt merely 'misunderstood', 'damaged' or 'vulnerable' like Thompson was - he appears to be a genuinely bad person - so its going to be interesting to see exactly where writer Mike Costa goes with this.My only concern is that (as spoiled by the cover image for this volume), its not long before more familiar hosts for the symbiote arrive back on the scene, and its quite possible that the character of Lee Price has been thrown on the scrap heap as early as this first story arc, which is disappointing if true because Venom is potentially one of Marvels greatest villains, yet weve constantly seen him end up as more of a hero - be that a lethal protector, a government agent, or a Guardian of the Galaxy. To tread the same path yet again would be disappointing. Then there is Gerardo Sandovals art. I've never been a fan of his style if I'm honest - its very rough, untidy, all of his characters lack expression and look somewhat the same facially, and its what I would at best describe as an 'acquired taste'. Its not to my liking, although he does have a comic book style that seems to have some broad appeal, that hopefully will help the book be a success instead of falling by the wayside after a half dozen issues like so many of Marvels other 'ongoing' series.Overall however I'm really quite pleased and intrigued by this new direction for Venom.
