Dominion: Season 1

UPDATED REVIEW 8-2-2014Most of the first four episodes of Dominion were really hard to review. There were more reasons to give it one star than five for sure! However, the reasons to give it five stars (visuals, accidental spots of good acting, the story mixes angels and humans in a different way--- God has forsaken them (both), visuals again), are just too good to ignore. I could speak with someone who gives it all fives and someone who gives it mostly one stars and agree with both.The characters and story line take interesting turns as the series progresses. If you have not seen Episode five, Something Borrow, Episode six, Black Eyes Blue, and Episode seven 7 Ouroboros, reviewing the show is unfair in my opinion. I stopped watching after Episode four, waited a few weeks and watched five,six, and seven. The drama picks up, the story line gets much more interesting, and the acting follows the story in improvement. The show moves from okay/good to great/excellent. After seven episodes, you will want more. After seven episodes, I think many people will have forgiven the show for past and current transgressions and forgotten (or do not care) about some of the oddities that I list below.TWO NOTES: If you are well read -and critical- about angel folklore/fantasy and/or are very sensitive to bad acting, the first four episodes may be challenging for you. Not to worry, it gets better! I really like the show BUT YMMV big time with regards to acting (in episodes 1- 4) and choices regarding how to portray the angels. The acting is so hot and cold at first. Christopher Egan could be a victim of bad directing (Episodes 1-4), but his acting as 'the one' is best described as annoying --- and I like him on the show, just not as the one. He gets better; in some ways he grows into the role. Contrast that with the delightfully maniacal and manipulative relationship between Arika (by Shivani Ghai) and David Whele (by Anthony Head). While not Oscar worthy, definitely some of the better acting moments of the show. Shivani Ghai delights throughout the show. Claire Riesen (by Roxanne McKee) all but switches characters over the first 7 episodes. She wears the new Claire (starting with episode 6) like an old pair of jeans. Kudos to the show for the change.Now for all the very Angel literate crowd. Ariel is portrayed as the older not younger sister. Gabriel and Michael have a less than antagonistic relationship. So far, all the archangels are against mankind - maybe because God left us, but still there is only Michael who really loves the humans and that may be driven from the guilt from all the destruction, pain, and murder that he has inflicted on humans over the centuries.Finally, its hard not to LOVE Dominion if the show is your kind of thing and admittedly, it my kind of show. Could they have done better early on, YES. However, I like the idea sooo much, that I will take the show as is and just enjoy. Have they just butchered some of the Angel folklore, ideas, popular history and notions? Of course. Is the show a bit annoying in their portrayal of the angels, lower angels, and humans? Yes, yes, and yes again. BUT for me, I do not have to forgive the overly human like arch angels, or the overly beast like lower angels; or even the overly flawed (and narrowly portrayed) humans to enjoy the good things in the show. You might forgive those issues as the drama, acting, and storyline get more and more pleasing. Stay with the show and your entertainment taste buds will be rewarded. I like were the show started, hated some of the road they traveled, but really enjoy what they have done overall. I give the show an A for effort and a A for execution for episodes 1, 5, 6, and 7. I will go with no grade on 2, 3, and 4. They were just not up to par for me. But hey, someone could probably say the same for my review :)!

While it can be a bit campy like the first season of Battlestar Galactica, this SyFy original brings together some of those great actors from TV history to whom you always say, "I can't quite remember their name, but they're really good!" The themes here are deeper than the usual post-apocalyptic shows: the writers must have realized they can't just riff off of what The Walking Dead, Revolution and Falling Skies already have shown us in detail. Instead, that reality is hinted at but not overstated, a backdrop full of the rich history we've already learned through our obsessive viewing of those other zombie, alien and plague dramas we love so much. It gives us room to enjoy the whole NEW themes this show explores in a genre that few dare to touch: Biblical Revelation. For the first time on the small screen, I'm getting to see the Books of Enoch and Revelation played out, along with the sorts of questions asked about the difference between men and angels, and whether or how or angelic counterparts get jealous of humanity's earthly inheritance. I've seen these questions asked before in Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' novel trilogy, and of course in John Milton's 'Paradise Lost.' I also witnessed in the early-cancelled 'Kings' TV series how richly a Biblical story (which are quite often more racy and complex than what even the writers at Showtime and HBO deliver) can be told, set in modern times. I look forward to seeing where this show goes, and hope that it stays true to the questions and themes that no one has touched in television yet. It would be fantastic to see.

This show is reasonable, but it could be so much better. For my taste I find three main problems with the show that simply ruin it for me. But if there's a season 2 they could be addressed.The first is an aesthetic issue. I hate, absolutely hate, not being able to see things. I have a tv. The v part is for vision. And if I wanted to not see a show I would use a radio. Unfortunately the producers have decided to film everything in places in a dark pallette which they may think adds suspence to the show, but really doesn't. It detracts. And there are so many scenes where half the screen is left in complete blackness where I simply wanted to scream at the stupidity of it all.The second issue that bugs the hell out of me is that as I watched this show I kept having this endless question running through my head - why are there any human beings left alive? The angels are overpowered as characters, the humans seem to be walled up in their cities in desperate straights - so why haven't they been finished off already instead of somehow lingering on for decades with their tech largely destroyed, reduced to hand weapons, and their armies, airforce, navy also gone. I know they give a reason, that both sides fought to their limits and were decimated, but when the angels seem to have limitless numbers, I don't buy it.The third issue though, is the killer for me. It's the motivation for the angels to attack humanity. It's completely nonsensical. Look the theory goes that apparently God has turned his back on the angels. They blame mankind for that. That makes no sense what so ever. If God was upset with us he'd turn his back on us, not on the angels. And as even a cretin would understand that I find it hard to accept that the angels could believe it was otherwise.This of course then leads to the really stupid part. The angels keep trying to kill the chosen one. Ok the archangels might have worked out not to, but the rest seem perfectly determined to kill him. In short the angels, who have as their single agenda to have God return to them are determined to kill the man who bears God's word on his flesh.As I say if there is a second season of this show, the writers need to do some serious thinking.

Grâce à l'avis d'une autre cliente, j'ai découvert cette série dont aucun magazine n'avait parlé.J'arrête tout de suite les spectateurs motivés par l'aspect biblique/action movie et sombre de la jaquette. On est loin d'un univers philosphico-apocalyptique que n'aurait pas renié à l'époque les films Prophecy.Pour reprendre les éléments de cette série, il s'agit d'une "suite" au film Legion, bon gros navet de type survival, où un petit groupe tentait d'échapper à l'attaque d'anges belliqueux venus reprocher aux humains la disparition de Dieu. Le film empruntait déjà l'esthétique zombiesque des hordes d'assaillants pour renforcer l'aspect horrifique.[spoiler alert] Nous avons donc le fils adoptif du héros du dit film, identifié comme l’Élu qui doit sauver la Terre de l'invasion angélique. C'est pas gagné, le pauvre Alex ressemblant plus à un quaterback décérébré qu'à un meneur type John Connor. Chris Egan, l'acteur, est l'archétype du blondinet à dents blanches et gras du pectoral, bref, il fait un héros ennuyeux. Son personnage est soutenu dans son apprentissage par l'archange-amidézumains Michael, le canonnissime Tom Wisdom, ici peu aidé par un rôle relativement plat. Les autres personnages masculins (Buffy, Ô s'cour, Gilles s'est reconverti en politicien véreux) accumulent tous les défauts du monde : lâches, traitres, girouettes, bornés, sadiques, un vrai festival du pire.Heureusement, les personnages féminins apportent la force au show. Je ne sais pas à quoi songeait le créateur de la série d'ailleurs, mais s'il a offert les premiers rôles à des hommes, ce sont bien les femmes, leur force et leur intelligence, leur loyauté ou leurs facultés d'adaptation qui sont mises en avant. De façon assez insidieuse, on les voit prendre le pouvoir, absorber les scènes chargées en émotion, détourner l'attention des héros, jusqu'à leur piquer toute substance. J'en étais même à croiser les doigts pour le personnage de Noma, me fichant royalement de ce qui allait advenir d'Alex. De là à les déclarer Reines de la série, il n'y a qu'un pas que la saison 2 pourrait bien confirmer. [spoiler terminé]La série maintenant. Elle commence de façon un peu poussive, la faute aux personnages et une intrigue plutôt banale. Peu à peu, on la suit sans déplaisir, et elle prend réellement son envol dans les deux derniers épisodes. C'est un peu un diesel sur ce coup-là, mais je ne suis pas entièrement convaincue, au point de me jeter sur la saison 2 (quand elle sortira). Elle n'affiche aucun humour au compteur, son plus gros défaut d'ailleurs, et manque de figurants. Les effets spéciaux sont honnêtes, et les décors n'inspirent pas grand chose.Concernant le DVD, je n'ai pas jeté d’œil sur d'éventuels bonus, mais la qualité des disques est bonne.

Nur eine kleiner Korrektur Der Auserwählte (Christopher Egan) kämpft an der Seite des Erzengels Michael (Tom Wisdom) gegen seinen Bruder, den Erzengel Gabriel (Carl Beukes) der, der Menschheit die Schuld gibt am verschwinden seines Vaters (Gott).Die Effekte sind für eine Serie sehr gut gelungen auch der Soundtrack ist gelungen.Die Synchron Stimme von Michael ist gewöhnungsbedürftig wenn man das englisch Original kennt.Auf der Blu -ray gibt es die Englische und Deutsch TonspurAls Extras ist ein Episondenguide, Deleted Scenes und Gag Reel vorhanden.Unbedingt die 2. Staffel ansehen!!!!Die 3. Staffel gibt es leider nicht, aber Fans auf der ganzen Welt hoffen das evtl Netflix sie rettet.ZU guter letzt die Serie ist sehr spannend, auch mal was Anderes als immer nur Zombies,Hexen, Vampire oder haufenweise jahrelang die gleichen Crime Serien mit psycho Killer.

Schön fotografiert, gut ausgestattet, überwiegend ordentlich gespielt, aber mit überfrachteten Drehbuch, das anfangs auch unübersichtlich daher kommt.Leider werden die immer gleichen Szenenwechsel-Bilder verwendet: Das wird irgendwann so ermüdend wie die immer gleiche Startsequenz beim ollen „Kampfstern Galactica“...Nach dem vierten Abflug eines Engels vom Las Vegas Stratosphere-Turm war auch dieser Staun-Effekt verpufft.Schade, aber da ist mehr möglich gewesen.

J'ai visionné la saison 1 et je suis déjà captivé par la série, même si l'histoire est une fiction sur le retrait de Dieu, les archanges livrés à eux-mêmes se livrent bataillent pour dominer les hommes, créatures chéries du divin.Cette histoire se tient bien et reste captivante d'épisode en épisode. L''affrontement continuel des archanges Mikaël et Gabriel , le premier au service de l'homme alors que le second endosse l'ange exterminateur, à la recherche du père disparu reste l'enjeu dont le but est d'utiliser l'élu pour sortir de la guerre et montrer au Père que la race humaine mérite son retour.On s'attache aux personnages car parmi les hommes il y a l'élu qui découvre au fur et à mesure sa tâche énorme et ses dons et cela me fait penser un peu aux nouveaux films genre Hunger game ou la divergente c'est un peu dans le style, c'est à dire se surpasser dans un monde impitoyable ou les épreuves jonchent le chemin de la rédemption. Donc à suivre avec grand intérêt.

J'ai découvert par un heureux hasard cette série fantastique. Cette guerre entre les survivants humains de la cité Vega et les anges noirs associés aux anges supérieurs tout vêtus de cuir rouge est tout à fait passionnante. Le Bien et le Mal s'opposent à travers les personnages de l'archange Michaël et de son frère l'archange Gabriel. Il y a aussi l'Elu supposé guider les humains hors des ténèbres. Et vous rajoutez des femmes humaines et anges au milieu de tout ça pour pimenter l'histoire.Les effets spéciaux avec les anges sont très réussis. 9 épisodes. Audio en Français, Anglais. Sous-titres en Français. Les sous-titres pour sourds et malentendants ne sont qu'en Anglais.
