Product Description Shelter Me is an uplifting film about shelter pets improving the lives of those who adopt them. It is hosted by Katherine Heigl and sponsored by Ellen DeGeneres' company, Halo, Purely for Pets. The film celebrates the human animal bond with positive stories about shelter pets and their new homes. In the film, we see the journey of two stray dogs, from the day they are picked up on the streets and brought to the shelter until the day they became a beloved family pet. We go inside a women's prison where inmates train shelter dogs to become service animals for people with disabilities. We also show how shelter pets are helping our returning war veterans cope with PTSD. Shelter Me is about hope, redemption, helping others and making a difference. Review "Shelter Me is single-minded in its goal: It wants people to consider adopting a dog from a shelter." --The New York Times"Shelter Me is a must see documentary. It is moving, tear-jerking, and uplifting - all at the same time. This is a must see for all people who love dogs and love what humans and dogs can do for each other." --San Antonio Pets Examiner"I was moved to tears of joy as I watched the bond develop between the humans and their new found companions. I think you will also be incredibly moved by this most-welcomed documentary that spills over with hope for those beings, nonhuman and human, who need help in a demanding world." --Psychology Today"Shelter Me is a must see documentary. Adopting a shelter pet will change your life!
This movie is based on real life examples of how adopting a shelter pet changed the lives of the owners and the dogs. It follows the story of two dogs rescued from the street to when they were placed with new homes. It shows a program where shelter dogs are trained by women inmates at a prison to be companion dogs for disabled people. Finally, two veterans tell how being matched with a shelter dog has helped them recover from PTSD. All of these scenes were heartwarming and touching. I was especially moved by the emotional interviews with the veterans."Shelter Me" does an excellent job of demonstrating that shelter pets are not in the shelter because they are bad pets. They are there because they are pets without a home. If you or anyone you know is thinking of buying a dog from a breeder, WATCH THIS MOVIE FIRST! It will change your mind!

Very touching tribute to newer avenues for shelter dogs
I wanted to see this show on PBS but I couldn't figure out the viewing schedule on the station in my area. I am highly into anything that is dog related so I had heard of all these different programs mentioned in this special before. It was still very interesting and moving to view these individual programs that were featured. What struck me as always was how deep an impact each of these dogs had on the trainers and then again on the people they were placed with. I definitely needed my Kleenex during the last part of the program-PTSD soldiers and their dogs.I did buy the movie for download. I think just a rental would have sufficed unless I wanted to share the film with a friend. So happy there a shelter dogs getting a chance to change someone's world.

There are MANY ways to help animals, and find them homes & improve their lives
This was heartwarming, THANK YOU for inviting me! I am looking forward to the other episodes of this series and hope there will be others like it coming available as well. I love the way the stories covered different aspects of animals' lives and the help they bring us-- for veterans, as companion/service dogs, animals providing comfort even though they may need a walker/cart to walk, themselves, and the heroic efforts they regularly make on our behalf. Many wet eyes around the theatre. THANK YOU. Please make more, and share with us.:)

Shelter Dogs are Great Dogs
As the owner of 2 great dogs adopted from a local shelter, both now having earned their AKC CGC certification, and 1 now being a certified therapy dog, I can only applaud the work documented in this film. Anyone thinking of adopting a pet should really think about not only adopting from a shelter, but also about training that dog for service. This film documents just some of the groups doing that, and may encourage anyone viewing it to check out the groups in their own area and get involved. It is so rewarding to see the joy a therapy dog brings to those they meet.

No Title
No way I was going to give this a five star review. Its a documentary! Five star reviews are limited to Braveheart or Lion in Winter. I believe great films serve to enlighten, inform or stimulate a viseral response. This film does all three. Its a documentary to be sure, but great stories are told - and a very important human dynamic is revealed. The power of love and self esteem in the formation or reformation of a human being . . . and a dog.

Worth your money
The importance of domestic animals in the healing process of humans cannot be overestimated. This film does a superb job of showcasing the impact of the unconditional love & devotion of " man's best friend " in the mental & emotional rehabilitation of prison convicts, veterans of war, and other damaged individuals for whom these creatures become literally life-saving. It is a beautifully edited & scripted film with heart-warming testimonies and terrific visuals. Money well-spent.

This is a really inspiring program. I love that saving an animals life can also help a human in need to have a higher quality of life. It brought tears to my eyes to see how grateful some of our prior armed service people were to receive a service dog.

only one episode!
I had thought this dvd would cover an entire season of this show. It does not - it only covers one episode. Considering the fact that it took almost an entire month to arrive, I am very disappointed with this order. The only thing that keeps me from being very angry about this is the realization that (hopefully) part of the proceeds from this overpriced sale will go to animal rescue.
