Product description DEF LEPPARD .co.uk Tongue firmly in cheek, Def Leppard vocalist Joe Elliott once referred to his band's wildly successful anthemic hard rock as "deep and meaningless". Indeed, while peers of the Sheffield rockers were scrambling to embrace successive waves of punk, new wave, alternative and post-whatever, the Leps stayed true to their arena-rock roots and became one of the most successful, if least hyped, bands of the 1980s and early 90s. Only their 1996 album Slang bowed to market trends; its disappointing showing only spurred a return to familiar form on Euphoria. The band also brought producer and de facto sixth band member Robert "Mutt" Lange back into the fold for a trio of tracks, including "Promises", a seamless wall of hooks that outshines even the band's Pyromania and Hysteria prime. Though they've largely been left out of the critical debate, Def Leppard long ago established their credentials as power-pop monsters with the public. All that's left for the pundits to decide is: Def Leppard--band out of time or band for the ages? --Jerry McCulley

Far better than the very 'un-Leppardy' Slang, Euphoria is, however, not as exciting, or indeed as euphoric as the title suggests. Saying that, it starts off making you believe that this is a very special album. 'Demolition Man' and 'Promises' are pure gold. The opener is urgent, bright and catchy. The follower is as good but changes mood slightly for an introspective track that is about as good as they get. Cracking. Then they go all 'rawk' and cheese with 'Back in Your Face'. It's not awful but it's definitely skippable. 'Goodbye' is not one of their best ballads either. The less said about 'All Night' the better. It's like 'Back...' only worse.'Paper Sun' is where it gets better and it is a thoughtful track, both in tone and creatively. 'It's only Love' is missable. '21st Century Girl' is actually rather good fun, despite the title being one of the ones I thought I'd hate. 'To Be Alive' is ok but not very interesting, another ballad. 'Disintegrate' is one of the best tracks. It is only a few minutes long, an instrumental but it is exciting and fun and catchy (what Def Leppard is when they are good). The last 3 tracks are all of about the same quality and are 3 star efforts at best, none being particularly bad, but none stand out either. There are about 5 tracks I would continue to listen to on here, the rest is forgettable. They got much better with their next release, X.

Only one thing wrong . Read on !
There's just one thing wrong with listening to DL. Listen to any one of their albums and you'll not want to listen to anything else. Absolutely outstandingly brilliant, why I've left it so long I don't know, but I'm now making up for lost time. I've now got 9 of their albums AND a DVD
