Story with a moral.
This story has a simple moral. You reap the fruit of your efforts. It is straightforward, yet the story is entertaining. The illustrations are great and this book is a must have for all toddler libraries. The point is driven home by the repetition of "not I" by the various animals when they are asked by the hen to help her plant the wheat. This was one of my favorite books as a child and will be a favorite of my children too.

Every parent should read this book to their young children!
I ordered this version because it is a "Little Golden Book" style child's book. This is the same story I remember from first grade in the late 1950's. It speaks of how too many want to do nothing, but then expect to reap the benefits of results of those who worked hard to produce something. In this story, the end product was tasty fresh-baked bread prepared by a barnyard hen who harvested the wheat, grinded the wheat into flour, prepared the dough and baked her bread. At each step she sought help, but the other animals were "too busy " to help her. She exacted her "revenge" in the end. This story with its moral of "hard work produces reward" has come to mind dozens of times in dealing with folks who do nothing but expect much. BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT TO YOUR KIDS! Maybe even read it to that 20 something who is still camping out at home!

A classic tale of help and cooperation
Just as I remember it when I was a child. We recently had a baby shower for my daughter and the invitation requested a favorite childhood story be given and signed in place of a card. She received a nice selection of older classic stories, as well as, several newer titles. It was a lovely idea and she now has a great start on a home library for our grandson!

Thriftbooks get only those marded very good
I love the story for children and I love the old edition. The last two books from Thriftbooks were not in the condition described by them. A Shepard Looks at Psalm 23 was marked up quite abit. Amazon was good at delivery, but I will be more careful in ordering from Thiftbooks.

Excellent children's book...
Excellent children's book! My mom used this book to teach me how to read when I was four-years-old. This text has so many valuable lessons and teaches several important social skills in a fun text. "The Little Red Hen" has always been one of my favorite books!
