It can be used on a single wire, as long as you connected series. **Q: can you use this on a wie that's un powered to find a break or short** A: yes we can the transmitter power the line **Q: can it be used to find a short in de-energized wiring in wall of a house** A: I would have say no because in a car there is 12 DC volts in line for power to find the break..this device is made to take up to 42 DC volts not AC volts like found in a house...Maybe you could put 12 volts DC through your house wiring and use this tool to find the short,,, BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NO FEED BACK TO YOUR MAIN POWER...I would be very carefull....
