πππππ±a review from Mrs. Lπ±ππππFirst of all, I think of all of the products I have ever purchased from Amazon, the reviews of this cat food for cats with kidney disease were the most important for me to read. πππThank you to everyone who expressed their honest opinion about this product. πππ The reviews really helped me with a difficult decision to switch to this product which was different than the product my vet originally recommended when my poor cat went into kidney failure. πThank you thank you thank you. π I firmly believe this product, which my cat loved and tolerated better than another product, which needed vet paperwork to purchase . . . Helped my cat to live an extra year. When my cat went into kidney failure, my vet indicated that she had a poor prognosis and probably only had another 6 months or so to live. She recommended a specialized diet for poor renal function. My cat never liked this particular brand of food, but I was resolved to use this food in hopes of helping my cat. It was also incredibly expensive. At times, it was also difficult to order. One day, I attempted to reorder this brand my vet recommended, but it was going to take an extraordinary amount of time to arrive and required a vet prescription. After reading the reviews here on Amazon, of Hi-Tor Neo Diet for Cats, I ordered a case of it. I called my vet to tell her that I had to order a different brand of cat food and she said that this was a good choice and was a good product. Oooookay! My cat loved it. She ate it with gusto up until the last week before she died. I really felt that the Hi-Tor brand gave my cat extra months to live. I think it also made her happy eating it. Sixteen years ago, we found her abandoned in the woods. A tiny, fluffy little tuxedo kitten. She was extremely malnourished and starved for food and attention. She was so tiny when we found her, we thought she was about 8 weeks old. When we took her to the vet, we found out she was probably 5 months old. It broke our hearts to see her so neglected and bedraggled. When she ate kitten food, she growled and choked the food down as fast as she could. Throughout her life, she always had a special relationship with food. Eating was a big deal for her. So, when she enjoyed the Hi-Tor food, we were grateful for the product for more reasons than its benefits for her failing kidneys. And, we really do think it helped her to live longer. πππππGreat cat food. It really did what it was supposed to do for our little cat!

picky cat!
Update as of 11/13/15I've decided to go back to the prescription stuff you get at Petsmart. For whatever reason, 6 months ago he started being picky about this kind. Quite a bit would get wasted in the process. Due to that it's not much cheaper then the Hill's Prescription Diet. He loves that stuff specifically the tuna flavors. I would give Hi-Tor a chance to see if your cat does like it. Unless their super picky eaters. Salmon oil does help him eat this stuff(though there is still waste) so I can use up the rest of the cans.As far as ingredients, Hi-Tor and Hill's have both been on the same lists for having less then quality ingredients. It's ultimately your decision, with consulting your vet. Mine had never heard of this brand, and suggested Hill's. Not sure if this was partial to them selling the Hill's in his office or not.Raja was diagnosed two years ago at the age of 7. He is a wonderful Manx cat with a very special personality. He was born next to my bed therefore have a special bond with him. He is extremely picky and eats a little at a time several times a day. These are much cheaper then at the pet stores and don't require me to mess with his prescription card all the time. Doesn't care for thr renal dry food very much but loves this stuff!

Elderly cat loves it!
We have a 20 year old female cat who was diagnosed with kidney disease a couple of years ago. Prior to that, she also had issues with UTI infections. Because of these two things, we looked for a food that was low in magnesium for the urinary benefits and low in phosphorus for her kidneys. We settled on Dave's canned food and Purina One dry food. She never had another UTI, but still had a lot of constipation issues and was losing a lot of weight while not eating much of the Dave's. We ended up back in the emergency vet for a severe bout of constipation. It was at that point that we decided to switch her to Neo and cut out the dry food entirely. She is doing marvelously with the Neo and eats 3x as much of it as she did the Dave's. No more constipation and she's gaining weight. It's also less expensive. Unfortunately, all of our pets ended up with special needs, so we have to balance their care with the expense. So K/D was not an option. After thorough research, Neo seemed like the best route.I have given 4 stars instead of 5 because this product may not be ideal for everyone. It's not the BEST thing a cat with renal disease/failure can be on. And it's high in fat for cats who may have weight issues. Our cat was underweight and doesn't eat much in a sitting, so this is not a concern for us. All of this considered, it was far more important for us to find a low phosphorus and magnesium wet food that our cat will happily eat as her sole diet and this brand has filled that need.
