A wonderful addition to the eclectic pattern library
I love michiyo’s patterns and have collected her books in Japanese for years, though it is not my language. I can generally figure out the crochet patterns, but the knitting eluded me. So I was beyond thrilled to see a selection of her very unique patterns made more accessible to English-speakers like me. She has such a vast library of stunning patterns, I hope she considers translating more of them!

Fabulous innovation for shapes!
Very interesting shapes in this collection. Inspired knitting, and I plan to use lots of them as basic dress making silhouettes for my own designs. Add some cool colourwork and you've got a great creation! The double layered vest thingy is wonderful. I plan to use it as a template but in fingering weight yarn and vivid colour. I have already used the wrap that is simply a long rectangle with a slit in the center. I re-engineered it to make a stole for my daughter with a tweed look in blue-violet heathered yarns. It looks stunning with a white silk satin blouse and navy blue trousers. Thank you michiyo!

Japanese knitting book
The cover pattern is the best one . Some of the patterns are really crocheted ones which is a different term than knitting for Americans. Beware if you only knit.

More crochet than knitting.
This is not really a book of knitting patterns, more crochet than knitting. I know that Japanese knitting books can be either knitting or crochet, I would have expected the translation to be more accurate though. Many of the patterns are very simplistic and boxy. I wish that I had seen the book before ordering it.

Interesting but not to everyone's taste -- contains 1/3 or more crocheted designs, too
I really wish Amazon would add a button for "It's a lovely book but not at all what I wanted or expected." I hate to give a book a low grade if the quality of the book is good, simply because it's not to my taste. This is a pretty book with great photos of each design. The patterns in this book are clever and many are made by knitting flat pieces and folding or sewing them in ingenious ways to create the garments. A variety of yarn weights are used. Both diagrams and schematics are included, helpful given that many designs are constructed in a unique way. Unfortunately, I had expected more of the intricate lace and cabled stitchwork you often see in magazines like Keito Dama, more fitted looks with more advanced skills--while there are a few of these, there are a good number of boxier designs. If you aren't sure, I'd advise checking out photos of the garments before you order. I took one star away because there is a significant proportion of crocheted designs (I counted 16 knit to 9 crocheted designs).. This is a peeve of mine -- the book should clearly let purchasers know that a third or more of the designs are crocheted since the two crafts are not interchangeable.

Study pattern before starting
There are interesting, thoughtful patterns here, mixed in with others that I found less successful, but that is a personal taste. Many of them use use thicker yarns; aran and chunky. Book also contains some crochet patterns. The largest size is still not terribly large, so be prepared to make your own adjustments if bust size is mid 40s and up.These really are Japanese patterns, which are diagrams not much text, but helpful notes have been added to each pattern.

100% Recommended for All Knowledgable Knitters who want to create their own knitted adventure!
Japanese Knitting. Patterns FOR (not of) Sweaters, Scarves and other knits and Crochet for experienced needle crafter's .... Is not a book for beginners - unless you are an exception and can understand how to knit and crochet garments by interpretation of diagrams and charts.I am a very experienced knitter and I have worked with pattern creators so I have and can work out how to knit o.o.a.k creations from photographs and the jotted notes and scribbled ideas of knitwear designers without a pattern having been written first. This book is written for people like me who can do that who have the knowledge and know-how to be able to create unique patterns .. is just part of the knitwear creation - in other words - this book has been written to encourage you the experienced and knowledgable knitter to take the next step and design and knit your own bespoke couture knitwear - this book which is brilliantly written - will aid you to realise your potential and help you to design and create your own knitted and crocheted garments exclusive to you that no-one else has! The only limit is your own imagination!

Great book, new knitting experience, for competent knitters tho!
A really good knitting book, a new way of thinking about how you knit as a European. Luckily the way the patterns are laid out is explained and then it bizarrely makes a lot of sense! You do need to be at least a competent knitter to do these projects though!
