So far I've only made the octopus, but what an octopus!!!! I'm making another, bigger! It's very exciting.

I highly recommend this book
Yeah okay, the pattern is written with British crochet terms, but once you learn to translate it, it's as simple as anything else. The patterns are really cute. There are 12 sea creatures to make ranging in difficulty. I made six so far and plan to make four more. The shark and the octopus are my favorites while the seahorse and the angler fish are quite unattractive. I highly recommend this book!

Disorganized and confusing
Patterns are super cute, but I wouldn't recommend to beginners because the directions are often wrong or incomplete, creating a lot of confusion and frustration. Also, the hand drawn graphs are cute in theory, but very difficult to actually read and use. The space would be better used to provide pictures of particular stitches, or of what the piece should look like at that part of the pattern. It's crazy to me that there are so many mistakes and omissions. Makes me think these patterns weren't tested ahead of publication.I think if you are an experienced crocheter, you'll have no problem deciphering these patterns. If your a newbie, stay away.

Wonderful patterns, but British terminology
I own Mooncie's previous book, "Crocheted Wild Animals" and have enjoyed making several patterns from that book. Mooncie tends to like big projects, which is a nice change from most Amigurumi books that favor smaller stuffies. I've bought the kindle version of the book since the paperback is not yet available, but will likely buy the paperback when it finally comes out, since it is typically easier for me to read patterns in a book. The patterns in this book are well written and I'm already halfway through my first project. The only reason I did not give five stars to this book is because it uses British terminology for stitches, rather than American terminology. Thus what I would call a single crochet stitch, she calls a double crochet stitch. Her first book had an American version, maybe this one will eventually have one too.

Great crochet ideas
This is an awesome book. Both my daughter and I crochet and look for unusual patterns; also, patterns that we cannot produce ourselves without a lot of thought. This book has patterns for :whale, starfish, jellyfish, shark, seahorse, octopus, nautilus, angler fish, puffer fish, sea urchin, hermit crab, and lobster. It puts both written directions and charts. I have seen patterns for some of these creatures in other books but not nearly as detailed and the finished products do not look as good. For example, the shell for the hermit crab looks like the shell our real, live pet hermit crab had. I haven't made all the patterns, but they look pretty straight-forward and simple. My daughter and I are very pleased with this book. The one thing that might cause problems for some people is that the author uses British crochet terminology. That means when she says double crochet Americans should do single crochet. This is very easy to adjust to especially because she has a chart in the book on page 156 comparing UK and US crochet terms.

Definitely recommend this book
Great photos, very detailed instructions. Book includes both row-by-row instructions and charted instructions. All instructions and sizing are given in UK terms but conversions (stitches, needle size, etc) are listed at the end of the book.Yarn is suggested by brand, would have been slightly more useful (at least to me) to list suggested yarn weight instead.I made the shark and it looks mostly like the photos, wanted him to be a bit comical so I made large eyes and teeth, turned out the predicted size (~22", all these patterns produce sizeable stuffed animals), again very easy to follow patterns. The anglerfish is adorable, will definitely make more of these marine mates. I will probably purchase other books by this author, like the wild animal book.

octopus
I really love this book. I have made the nautilus and the puffer fish and working now on the octopus. I have come across what I think is a mistake in page 112 where row 10 ends with 34 stitches but the folllowing row 11 should end with 40 stitches. Wondering if anyone else ran into this and found a solution. Has anyone found other mistakes?

Wonderful Patterns
The patterns in this book are amazing. Not too difficult for seasoned crocheters and some beginner projects. I purchased the Kindle version and made an error in doing so since I print out my patterns to carry with me. I was unable to print my patterns thru the Kindle version. But I wanted the book immediately and Kindle was the only downloadable version and was less expensive, of course. Side note for American Crocheters: This pattern book is written in British terminology. Easy to translate but tough if you forget and start patterns using their stitches. the photo is my first project from this book.

Firstly, I absolutely agree that the octopus should be on the front cover as I've recently finished one and it looks amazing.I thought the written instructions were a little 'laboured' in places and could have been written more clearly for people less experienced than me (I've been crocheting for over 40 years). I thought the charts might be confusing to lesser experienced crocheters - it is absolutely crucial to know when you're supposed to be working on the wrong side or the right side of the octopus or the tentacles won't match on top and bottom. Although it is clear in the written instructions how to proceed and from which side of the work, for clarify for those who're only looking at the charts I think this info should be marked on them. I also found the tension impossible to achieve perfectly even though my tension is always usually spot on. Changing hooks didn't help as they just made it either too wide or not deep enough. I did come to a satisfactory compromise however, with a bit of 'juggling'.There's also an error on page 117 regarding working the eyeball. The instructions state we should start with yarn C (black, for the pupil) and then continue after round 1 in yarn A. Yarn A is red. In fact, the pattern should say yarn B (Ecru). It is the eye socket that is worked in the red, of course. This mistake, if gone unspotted, could waste someone's time and cause frustration.I haven't made anything else yet (puffer fish next!) so can't say if there are any more errors but I do feel that if you are not an experienced crocheter you may want to practice a little on simpler things before attempting some of the advanced stuff in the book. Once you're up to it, it's great fun.

Experience required but a brilliant set of patterns!
Such unique patterns! The instructions are clear although I’m aware of a mistake or two from other reviews..Experience is definately required - I’m an intermediate crocheter (I’ve made quite a few amigurumi toys) and I’m finding the patterns manageable but I’d never done a picot before, for example (puffer fish, see pics) but it was easy to understand! If you can make toys, this book is definately a goer !!I didn’t bother sourcing the exact yarn- I just used my existing acrylic yarns!

My favourite new book.
I bought this kindle book purely for the jellyfish! I made the jellyfish for my sister's birthday and it now hangs proudly in her hallway. I have since made the angler fish for my brother's 50th and he couldn't be more chuffed with it. I'm a proficient crocheter though at times I too can struggle with some designers patterns. Beginners could find some of the patterns a challenge but definitely worth the effort. A wonderfully fun book and great value for money.

Great patterns
This book has a really nice selection of creatures to make. The patterns appear in both written and diagram/ chart form and are pretty clear to follow. The difficulty level varies from quite easy to rather tricky, so crocheters of various ability levels will find something to make. I have made two so far, the shark and the nautilus; i did not use the brands specified, just various DKs, and they turned out fine - even though the nauilius, which I did first, seems to be the hardest pattern in the book! A great book for toymakers.

but the patterns and guides made perfect sense to me
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. I bought this book. I have only been crocheting for a year, but the patterns and guides made perfect sense to me. I made the lobster. It was easy, then I made the angler fish which came out great. I especially love the book as it is in crochet. I can't stand working on double pointed or circular needles in knitting, so this book was ace! Eventually I will make them all. It's such a great style of crochet. Amazing.
